What Happens During a Dog Photography Consultation?

What Happens During a
Dog Photography Consultation?
One of the things that surprises people most when they contact me is learning that I include a consultation before every photography session.
Many people assume the process starts when the camera comes out. For me, it starts much earlier.
The consultation is one of the most important parts of the entire experience because it allows me to learn about you, learn about your dog, answer your questions, and create a session plan tailored specifically to what you're hoping to create.
By the time session day arrives, we're not figuring things out on the fly. We already have a plan.
And that's one of the reasons clients often tell me the experience feels so personalized.
Learning About Your Dog
The first thing I want to learn about isn't what products you're interested in or where you'd like to display artwork.
I want to learn about your dog. Every dog is different.
Some dogs are highly food motivated.
Some would do absolutely anything for a tennis ball.
Some are social butterflies who want to greet every person they meet.
Others are a little more cautious and need time to warm up.
Some dogs are full of energy.
Others would prefer to take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the scenery.
The more I understand your dog's personality, the better I can design a session around them.
We'll talk about things like:
- Energy level
- Obedience level
- Favorite toys
- Favorite treats
- Likes and dislikes
- Any concerns you have
- Any behaviors we should plan around
This information helps me create an experience that works for your dog rather than expecting your dog to fit into a one-size-fits-all session.
As I discussed in a previous blog, great photographs aren't about perfect obedience.
They're about understanding the dog in front of us.
Planning The Session Experience
Once I have a better understanding of your dog, we can start planning the session itself.
One of the biggest decisions is location.
Depending on your dog's personality and the type of images you'd like to create, we may decide that the studio is the best fit.
For other dogs, one of the many outdoor locations I use throughout Massachusetts may be a better option.
Over the years I've developed a collection of locations that work well for different types of dogs, different personalities, and different styles of photography.
During the consultation we'll discuss what kind of experience you're looking for and what environment will help us create the strongest images.
We'll also talk about the types of photographs you'd like to create.
Some clients love traditional posed portraits.
Others want action images.
Some want photographs that include the entire family.
Others are drawn to silhouettes, environmental portraits, water images, seasonal scenes, or photographs incorporating special props.
There are no right or wrong answers.
The goal is simply to understand what speaks to you so we can build a session around those ideas.
Preparing For Success
The consultation is also where we discuss how to prepare for the session.
We'll talk about things like:
- Treats
- Toys
- Leashes
- Clothing choices
- Timing
- Expectations
Many people arrive at the consultation worried they don't know enough or haven't prepared enough.
The good news is that you don't need to have everything figured out.
That's part of what the consultation is for.
By the end of our conversation, most people feel significantly more relaxed because they have a much clearer understanding of what to expect.
Instead of wondering whether they're doing everything correctly, they have a roadmap.
Planning Artwork Before We Ever Photograph
One thing that often surprises people is that we talk about artwork before we ever create a single image.
That may seem backwards at first.
But in reality, knowing how you hope to enjoy your photographs can help shape the session itself.
We'll discuss things like:
- Where artwork may be displayed
- Room layouts
- Wall space
- Existing décor
- Product preferences
For example, different products tend to showcase different types of images particularly well.
If someone loves acrylic artwork, I know those pieces often have a beautiful sense of depth and dimension. During the session I'll pay close attention to creating images with strong foreground and background separation to help maximize that effect.
If someone is drawn to metal prints, I know that vibrant color and strong contrast tend to look incredible on that medium. I'll often look for opportunities to incorporate rich colors and dramatic environments.
Albums require a different approach altogether because they're designed to tell a story. In those cases, I want to make sure we're creating a variety of image types and moments that work well together as a collection.
In other words, I'm not simply creating photographs and hoping they'll fit a product later.
I'm intentionally creating artwork from the very beginning.
Understanding The Investment
Another important part of the consultation is discussing pricing.
I'd much rather have an open and honest conversation upfront than surprise someone later.
Professional photography and custom artwork represent a meaningful investment, and the consultation gives us an opportunity to discuss pricing, product options and what most clients typically choose.
My goal isn't to pressure anyone.
My goal is to make sure you have a clear understanding of the experience and the investment before deciding whether it's the right fit for you.
By the end of the consultation, most people have a good understanding of what to expect and whether Lil Monster Photography aligns with what they're looking for.
Time For Questions
One of the things I enjoy most about consultations is that they're conversations. They're not presentations. They're not sales pitches.
They're an opportunity for us to talk.
Clients ask questions about:
- Their dog
- The session process
- Locations
- Artwork
- Timing
- Pricing
- Products
- Anything else on their mind
I intentionally leave plenty of time for questions because I want people to feel comfortable and informed.
No one should leave a consultation wondering what happens next.
Why The Consultation Matters
By the time session day arrives, we're not strangers.
I know your dog's personality.
I know what motivates them.
I know what types of images you're excited about creating.
I know what kind of artwork you're considering.
I know what memories you're hoping to preserve.
One of the things clients frequently mention in their reviews is how customized the experience feels.
That's not an accident.
The consultation is where that customization begins.
It's where we build the foundation for everything that follows.
The consultation isn't simply a planning meeting.
It's the first step toward creating photographs and artwork that feel uniquely yours.
