Favorite Toy to a Photography Session?

You're getting ready for your dog's photography session and gathering everything you think you might need.

Leash.

Treats.

Water.

Poop bags.

Then you look at the battered tennis ball, half-destroyed stuffed animal or favorite toy your dog carries everywhere.

Should you bring that too?

Absolutely!

If your dog has a favorite ball, Frisbee, tug toy, stuffed animal or some bizarre object they've decided is the greatest possession on Earth, bring it.

We may use it throughout the session. We may use it for five minutes. We may decide it needs to remain safely hidden until we're ready to unleash whatever chaos its appearance is going to cause.

But I'd much rather have it available.

Toys aren't just props for photographs. They can help get your dog's attention, create action, give your dog a break and sometimes tell us something about the dog we're photographing.

And occasionally they make an appearance simply because no accurate record of your dog's life would be complete without that ridiculous stuffed animal they've carried around for the last five years.

Sometimes a Toy Is the Easiest Way to Get Your Dog's Attention

This is probably the most obvious reason we might use a toy during a photography session.

Sometimes I just need your dog to look in my direction.

A squeaker, ball or favorite stuffed animal can be perfect for getting their attention for a moment. That might give us perked-up ears, a head tilt or exactly the expression I'm looking for.

But that doesn't mean I'm going to spend the entire session dangling a toy over my camera.

It's just one of the tools we can use.

And every dog reacts differently.

One dog hears a squeaker and gives me the perfect head tilt.

Another hears the same squeaker and immediately decides that finding and murdering whatever made that noise is now the only important objective in life.

Both reactions tell me something about the dog in front of me.

Favorite toys can be useful for getting attention, creating expressions and showing a little more of your dog's personality.

Favorite Toys Can Create Great Action Photographs

If your dog loves chasing a ball or Frisbee, we've already got an activity they understand.

I don't have to teach them how to run for a ball.

They know this game.

Throw it.

Chase it.

Catch it.

Bring it back.

Maybe bring it back.

Okay, bringing it back is apparently optional. ��

That gives us opportunities to photograph the launch, the chase, the catch and whatever ridiculous expression happens somewhere in between.

The same thing can happen with tug toys or other toys your dog likes to play with.

Instead of manufacturing movement just because I want an action photograph, we can photograph your dog doing something they genuinely enjoy.

Those photographs aren't simply about a dog running.

They're about your dog playing.

Toys Can Give Your Dog a Break Without Really Stopping the Session

Photography sessions aren't obedience competitions , but we're still asking your dog to do things they don't normally spend an afternoon doing.

We may move to different areas of a location, change positions, ask them to wait for a few moments or simply ask for their attention more often than they're used to.

Eventually, they may need a break.

And sometimes the best break is play.

We can throw the ball.

Play tug.

Let them grab their stuffed animal and parade around with it.

For a few minutes, we're not asking your dog for anything. They get a safe release and an opportunity to do something familiar and fun.

That can help them reset before we move on to something else.

And I don't necessarily put the camera down.

Some of my favorite photographs can happen during the moments when the dog is technically taking a break.

They're relaxed. They're playing. They're being themselves.

That's exactly what I want to photograph anyway.

Play can create great action photographs while also giving a dog a break from everything else we're asking them to do.

Stuffed Animals Are Absolutely Welcome

Balls and Frisbees aren't the only toys worth bringing.

Stuffies are absolutely welcome.

And yes, that applies to both studio and outdoor sessions.

Over the years I've photographed dogs with stuffed wolves, Lamb Chop, a stuffed pickle and just about everything in between.

Some dogs carry their stuffies.

Some cuddle with them.

Some proudly show them off.

Others appear determined to demonstrate exactly how quickly they could remove every piece of stuffing if given the opportunity.

If your dog genuinely loves it, bring it.

It doesn't have to be something you'd normally think belongs in a professional photograph.

Sometimes the fact that it doesn't belong is exactly what makes the photograph interesting.

Wolves, Lamb Chop, pickles... I've seen quite the collection over the years.

Toys Can Add Color and Personality to Studio Photographs

Toys can serve another purpose during studio sessions.

Color.

In the studio, I have much more control over the background, lighting and overall look of an image. A brightly colored ball or stuffed animal can become another element in the photograph.

Sometimes it gives us a small pop of color.

Other times the colors in the toy can work with the background or lighting to help create the entire look of the image.

That doesn't mean you need to go shopping for a toy that matches the color palette we've planned.

Please don't.

I'd much rather photograph your dog with something that actually belongs to them.

If their beloved stuffed pickle happens to give us the perfect pop of green, even better.

In the studio, a favorite toy can sometimes add another element of color and personality to the photograph.

Sometimes the Favorite Toy Needs to Stay in the Bag

There's also a very important skill involved in using your dog's favorite toy during a photography session.

Knowing when not to use it.

Some dogs like their toys.

Other dogs lose all ability to function as a member of society the instant THE BALL appears.

Once that happens, sitting quietly for a portrait may no longer be particularly high on their list of priorities.

So if I know we're going to want some quieter portraits, photographs with you or other images where I need your dog's attention somewhere other than the toy, we may deliberately save their favorite thing for later in the session.

The toy isn't going anywhere.

We just need to be strategic about when it makes its appearance.

Because once Ball has entered the chat, Ball may be the only participant your dog is interested in for the remainder of the session.

For some dogs, once the favorite toy appears, absolutely nothing else matters.

Your Dog's Favorite Toy Doesn't Need to Be Pretty

You don't need to buy something new for your dog's photography session because you think it will look better in the photographs.

Actually, I'd prefer that you didn't.

Bring their toy.

The filthy tennis ball.

The Frisbee covered in teeth marks.

The stuffed animal that's missing an ear.

The toy you've washed seventeen times but somehow still looks disgusting.

That's the one I want to know about.

We certainly don't have to include it in every photograph. We may only use it for a few minutes.

But if that object is genuinely part of your dog's personality and daily life, that's much more interesting to me than a perfectly coordinated photography prop.

We're photographing your dog.

The weird stuff is part of the package.

It doesn't need to be new or photogenic. Sometimes the well-loved toys tell us much more about the dog.

Toys Can Help Tell the Story of Your Relationship

Sometimes the important part isn't the toy at all.

It's what you do with it together.

Maybe Dad is the person who throws the ball every night.

Maybe Mom plays tug.

Maybe your dog brings a particular toy to one of the kids whenever they want to play.

Those are little pieces of the relationship you've built with your dog.

And if we can photograph them, we aren't inventing an interaction simply because there's a camera pointed at you.

We're documenting something you actually do together.

Those photographs can become just as meaningful as the portraits where everyone is looking perfectly at the camera.

Someday That Stupid Toy Might Mean More Than You Expect

Right now, it might just be the disgusting toy you're tired of stepping on.

But the little details of life with our dogs have a way of becoming much more important later.

Someday you might see that toy in a photograph and immediately remember your dog carrying it through the house.

Dropping it at your feet every night.

Bringing it to the door when you came home.

Sleeping with it.

Or insisting that this particular tennis ball was somehow vastly superior to the twelve seemingly identical tennis balls sitting next to it.

A favorite toy might seem like a silly detail now.

Years from now, it may be one of the details that brings your dog rushing back into your memory.

Not because the toy mattered.

Because they loved it.

Sometimes the smallest details of life with our dogs become the things we remember most.

And It Doesn't Necessarily Have to Be a Toy

If there's something else that's part of your dog's life, tell me about that too.

Maybe it's a special blanket they've had since they were a puppy.

Maybe it's something associated with an activity you do together.

Maybe it's equipment used by a working dog.

Or maybe it's something I haven't thought of at all.

If you find yourself thinking, "This is just part of who my dog is," mention it during your consultation.

That doesn't necessarily mean it needs to appear in the finished photographs.

But I'd rather know about it so we can decide together than have you think afterward, "I wish we'd gotten one photograph with that."

Bring the Ridiculous Stuffed Pickle

So if you're packing for your dog's photography session and wondering whether you should bring their favorite toy, bring it.

We might use it to get their attention.

We might use it to create action photographs.

We might pull it out when they need a break.

We might build an entire photograph around it.

Or we might decide that the tennis ball needs to remain safely hidden until the last ten minutes because your dog will lose their mind the second they see it.

Either way, I'd rather have it available.

So bring the ball.

Bring Lamb Chop.

Bring the stuffed wolf.

And yes, bring the ridiculous stuffed pickle.

Your dog apparently has excellent taste. ��

What Happens If It Rains on the Day of Your Dog Photography Session?

You've scheduled your dog's outdoor photography session weeks, or maybe even months, in advance.

You've chosen the location. We've talked about what you're going to wear. Maybe you've even managed to keep the dog relatively clean.

Then you check the weather.

Rain.

Before you start rearranging your entire weekend or checking six different weather apps hoping one of them tells you what you want to hear, don't panic.

Weather is part of outdoor photography, especially here in Massachusetts, and it's something I'm watching too.

A questionable forecast doesn't automatically mean we're postponing your session. Sometimes we can adjust the time. Sometimes the forecast changes completely. Sometimes those clouds everyone is worried about actually give us beautiful light.

And sometimes it rains.

When that happens, we'll figure out the best option.

1. Don't Panic About the Forecast Yet

Massachusetts weather forecasts have an impressive ability to completely change their minds.

A week before your session, you might see a giant rain cloud sitting over Saturday afternoon.

By Wednesday, it's partly cloudy.

Thursday says showers.

Friday says the rain will stop by noon.

Saturday morning?

Who knows. ��

That's why I generally don't want to make a decision about an outdoor session too far in advance unless we're looking at a weather event that's obviously going to cause a problem.

As we get closer, the forecast becomes more useful, and we can start making decisions based on what conditions actually look like.

So if you see rain in the forecast five or six days before your session, you don't need to assume everything is ruined.

I'm keeping an eye on it too.

2. Clouds Don't Automatically Mean We Postpone

This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions about outdoor photography.

We don't necessarily need a bright, sunny day.

In fact, some cloud cover can work very well for photography.

Clouds can act almost like a giant diffuser, filtering harsh sunlight and creating softer, more even light. That can give us considerably more flexibility in where we photograph and can create some beautiful portraits.

What matters is the kind of clouds we're dealing with.

A bright or lightly overcast sky can be wonderful.

Dark, heavy storm clouds are another story, particularly if they're bringing rain with them or reducing the available light too much.

So don't look at a cloudy icon on your weather app and immediately assume your session is in trouble.

Sometimes the clouds are actually helping us.

Cloud cover doesn't necessarily mean bad photography weather. The right clouds can soften the light and create beautiful conditions for portraits.

3. Rain Is a Different Story

Clouds and rain aren't the same thing.

Unless we've specifically decided that photographs in the rain are the look we're going for, actual rain generally isn't particularly friendly to a portrait session.

Dogs get wet.

People get wet.

Hair and clothing get wet.

My camera equipment gets wet.

And the entire look of the photographs can become very different from what we planned during your consultation.

A few random drops aren't necessarily going to send us running for the cars, but steady rain is another matter.

The goal isn't simply to complete the session because we put a date on the calendar.

We want to create the photographs we planned while making sure your dog and everyone involved can actually enjoy the experience.

If rain is going to prevent us from doing that, we'll look at our other options.

4. Sometimes We Can Change the Time Instead of the Day

If rain is predicted, postponing the entire session isn't necessarily our first option.

Weather can change considerably over the course of a day.

Maybe the morning looks terrible, but the weather is expected to clear later.

Maybe showers are supposed to arrive in the evening, and moving the session a little earlier gives us the window we need.

When my schedule and the available light allow, I'll try to be flexible.

Sometimes moving a session earlier or later by a few hours is all we need to avoid the rain and still create the outdoor session we planned.

There are limits, of course. Outdoor photography depends heavily on light, so moving a session isn't simply a matter of finding any dry hour on the forecast.

But when we have some flexibility, changing the time can sometimes solve the problem without changing the day at all.

5. If We Need to Reschedule, We'll Find the Best Option We Can

Sometimes there's no getting around it.

If steady rain or storms are headed our way, moving the session to another day may be the best choice.

I'll make every reasonable effort to find another date that works.

Fall can make that a little more challenging.

September and October are some of my busiest months, and the schedule can become pretty full. Prime weekend dates and the best times for outdoor light aren't unlimited, so moving a fall session isn't always as simple as finding another open Saturday afternoon.

That's also one of the reasons I encourage people hoping for a fall session to book their dog photography session well in advance .

But we'll look at the schedule, the forecast and what we planned for your session and figure out the best option available.

I'd rather put some effort into finding another opportunity than force a session into weather that isn't going to give us the experience or photographs we wanted.

Fall is one of the busiest times of year for outdoor dog photography, which can make flexibility especially helpful when Mother Nature changes our plans.

6. What If It Rained Before the Session?

This one is a little different.

Rain overnight doesn't automatically mean we can't photograph the next day.

If the rain has stopped and the conditions are otherwise good, we may still be perfectly fine.

The bigger question can be the location.

Some places handle rain beautifully. Others become a muddy mess.

Trails can become slippery. Fields can become soaked. Low areas can collect water. And if we're photographing somewhere heavily wooded, everything may stay wet considerably longer than an open area.

This is another reason location planning matters.

We may decide the original location is perfectly usable, or we may be able to choose somewhere else that gives us similar photographs without requiring you and your dog to trek through six inches of mud.

Unless, of course, your dog considers six inches of mud the greatest possible outcome.

In which case they're probably going to be disappointed in me. ��

7. Your Dog Gets a Vote Too

Weather isn't only about whether I can create the photograph.

Your dog has an opinion too.

Some dogs couldn't care less about a little rain. Others act like getting wet is a personal attack.

My dog, Jake, falls firmly into the second category. If we're out for a walk and he sees someone's lawn sprinklers running ahead of us, he will literally try to pull me across the street to get away from them.

Apparently, being a 90-pound pit bull doesn't make you immune to the horrors of lawn irrigation. ��

So I'm pretty confident Jake would have some thoughts about me asking him to spend an hour posing for photographs in the rain.

And that's something I'll consider with your dog too.

Temperature matters. So does wind. A young, energetic dog may be perfectly comfortable in conditions that aren't appropriate for an older dog or a dog that's particularly sensitive to the weather.

Just like everything else during a session, I'm paying attention to the dog in front of me.

A technically workable weather forecast doesn't necessarily mean it's the right weather for your dog.

Jake would like everyone to know that lawn sprinklers are dangerous and should be avoided at all costs, which is why he loves his couch.

8. Wind, Heat and Other Weather Can Matter Too

Rain gets most of the attention, but it isn't the only weather condition we're watching.

Strong wind can create its own problems, particularly in exposed locations.

Extreme heat can be uncomfortable or even dangerous for dogs, which is one of the reasons summer sessions may need to happen very early in the morning or later in the evening.

And as we move toward winter, extremely cold temperatures can create another set of considerations.

The question is always the same:

Can we safely and comfortably create the photographs we're trying to make?

If the answer is yes, we keep going.

If it isn't, we adjust.

9. And We Have a Studio

If Mother Nature really refuses to cooperate, we may have another option.

Depending on what we planned for your session and the type of photographs you want, we may be able to move things into my studio in Natick.

That doesn't mean a rainy forecast automatically turns your outdoor session into a studio session.

They're very different experiences and create very different photographs.

But having a studio gives us another option to discuss, particularly if finding another outdoor date is difficult.

For some dogs and their people, keeping the original date and creating something completely different indoors may make more sense than trying to find another outdoor date.

Outdoor and studio sessions create very different photographs, but having an indoor option gives us additional flexibility when the weather refuses to cooperate.

You Don't Need to Watch the Weather for Me

As your session gets closer, you're certainly welcome to check the forecast.

I know you're going to anyway.

But you don't need to spend the entire week staring at three different weather apps trying to decide whether we're going to be able to photograph your dog.

I'm watching it too.

If the forecast starts looking questionable, we'll talk.

We might adjust the time.

We might move to another day if the schedule allows.

We might consider the studio.

Or we might decide that those clouds you've been worried about are actually going to give us beautiful light.

Weather is one of the variables that comes with photographing dogs outdoors, but figuring out how to work with those variables is part of my job.

Sometimes Massachusetts weather does exactly what it promised.

And sometimes Massachusetts weather laughs at all of us.

Either way, we'll figure it out.

My dog won't sit still and can't be off leash. Can you still photograph them?

You look through a dog photographer's portfolio.

There's a dog sitting perfectly in the middle of a field.

Another standing alone on a trail.

One running toward the camera with nobody anywhere nearby.

And you immediately think:

“Yeah... my dog could NEVER do that.”

Here's something you might not realize.

The dog you're looking at might not have been off leash.

They might have sat still for less than a second.

There might have been someone standing five feet away holding a long line.

And five seconds after I took that photograph, the dog may have been sniffing the ground, looking for squirrels or attempting to walk directly into my camera.

You see the finished photograph.

I see everything that happened before and after it.

Your dog doesn't need to be perfectly still or safely off leash for us to create great photographs.

Those aren't unusual challenges.

They're normal parts of photographing dogs.

1. First, Your Dog Probably Isn't Going Off Leash

This surprises people.

Many of the outdoor photographs you see in my portfolio look like the dog was completely alone in the environment.

That doesn't mean they actually were.

Safety comes before the photograph. Always.

There are plenty of reasons a dog might stay on leash during an entire photography session.

Maybe their recall isn't reliable.

Maybe they're reactive around other dogs.

Maybe they have a strong prey drive.

Maybe we're near a road.

Maybe there are other people, dogs or wildlife nearby.

Or maybe the location simply requires dogs to remain leashed.

None of those things prevent us from creating beautiful photographs.

I've written before about why safety should be the first consideration when choosing the right dog photographer , and this is a perfect example.

I'm never going to ask you to take an unnecessary risk with your dog because removing a leash would make my job easier.

Instead, we'll work with the leash.

And quite often, you'll never know it was there when you see the finished photograph.

2. The Leash Is Actually One of My Tools

For a dog who doesn't particularly believe in standing still, a leash isn't just a safety device.

It's useful.

It gives us a defined area to work within and gives the person handling the dog enough control to help create those tiny moments I'm looking for.

And sometimes they really are tiny moments.

Your dog doesn't need to sit beautifully in one spot for five minutes while I leisurely photograph them.

They might sit for two seconds.

Look at me for half a second.

Click.

And they're gone.

That's okay.

I don't need five minutes.

I need the right fraction of a second.

Professional dog photography involves anticipating those moments and being ready when they happen.

The finished photograph might make it look like your dog sat there patiently waiting for me.

You and I will know better and we don't have to tell a soul otherwise! ��

3. Yes, There's a Right Way to Hold the Leash

This is one of those little things clients wouldn't necessarily think about, but it can make a big difference in the finished photograph.

When we're creating a more traditional portrait, I'll often have someone stand behind the dog and hold the leash straight up so that it comes away from the top of the dog's head .

Why?

Because I already know I'm probably going to remove it later.

A leash running straight up and away from the dog usually gives me a much cleaner path to remove it during editing.

A leash running diagonally across the dog's chest, wrapped around a leg or crossing complicated areas of the background can make that process considerably more difficult.

So when you hear me giving oddly specific instructions about where to stand and how to hold a leash, there really is a reason.

At the same time, we're not trying to pull the dog into position or make them uncomfortable.

The leash gives us control and keeps the dog safe.

It shouldn't be the thing creating the pose.

The leash gives us a safe way to create the photograph. Careful positioning makes removing it from the finished portrait much cleaner.

4. What About Action Photographs?

This is another place where people assume the dog must have been off leash.

Not necessarily.

For action photographs, a long line can give the dog considerably more freedom to move while still allowing us to maintain control when needed.

That means we can create photographs of dogs:

running toward the camera
chasing a ball
moving through a field
exploring
playing
running toward their person

without automatically requiring them to be completely off leash.

Depending on what we're creating, the person handling the long line may also end up in the original photograph.

That's okay too.

People and long lines can often be removed during the editing process.

The important part is that we don't have to choose between safety and the photograph .

Safety wins every time.

Then I figure out the photograph.

The original photograph doesn't always look like the finished portrait. Long lines can give dogs room to move while keeping the session safe.

5. Sometimes We Stop Trying to Stop the Dog

Let's say your dog arrives at the park and immediately decides:

THIS IS THE GREATEST PLACE I HAVE EVER BEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE.

They're sniffing.

They're pulling.

They're looking everywhere except at me.

They've discovered a stick.

There may be a squirrel involved.

Trying to immediately force that dog into a quiet portrait probably isn't going to accomplish much.

So we don't.

Let them explore.

Let them sniff.

Let them get to know the environment.

Let them get to know me.

Maybe we walk for a little while.

Maybe we start with action.

Maybe we play.

And then we come back to the quieter photographs once some of that initial excitement has worn off.

I've talked before about why your dog doesn't need perfect obedience for great photographs , but there's a difference between a dog who doesn't know “stay” and a dog whose personal philosophy appears to be that standing still is a complete waste of valuable time.

Sometimes the best strategy isn't trying harder to stop them.

It's changing what we're doing.

6. The Finished Photograph Doesn't Show What Happened Between Frames

This might be my favorite part of photographing dogs.

Here's what you see:

A dog sitting beautifully in gorgeous light, looking directly into the camera.

Here's what might actually have happened:

Sniff.

Look left.

Stand up.

Sit again.

Eat grass.

Look at owner.

Hear squirrel.

LOOK AT GREG.

Click.

Walk directly toward Greg. ��

That's dog photography.

The camera doesn't need your dog to be perfect for ten minutes.

It needs me to recognize the moment when everything comes together and capture it.

That involves understanding dog behavior, anticipating movement and having the camera set up to respond quickly when the opportunity appears.

Sometimes the window is several seconds.

Sometimes it's considerably less.

But that's enough.

7. Sometimes the Movement IS the Portrait

There's another possibility.

Maybe I don't actually want your dog to sit still.

If your dog lives for playing ball, I want photographs of them playing ball.

If they run everywhere they go, let's photograph them running.

If they're the type of dog whose ears somehow end up three feet above their head every time they move, I absolutely want that photograph.

The goal of a dog photography session isn't to create the illusion that every dog is calm, perfectly trained and capable of holding a flawless pose.

The goal is to create portraits of your dog .

And sometimes your dog's energy is a huge part of who they are.

Those action photographs, goofy expressions and moments of complete chaos may ultimately tell their story better than a perfectly posed portrait ever could.

That doesn't mean we won't create the quiet portraits too.

We'll work toward both.

But I'm not interested in photographing every dog as though they're the same dog.

Your Dog Doesn't Have to Fit the Photograph

So if you look through my portfolio and think:

“There's absolutely no way my dog would sit there like that.”

That's okay.

They might not.

They might be on a leash.

They might sit still for less than a second.

They might spend the first part of the session exploring everything except the spot where we'd like them to sit.

They might need a long line for every action photograph.

And the portrait you ultimately hang on your wall may show none of that.

Or, even better, it might show exactly how wonderfully crazy they really are.

Your dog doesn't need to fit the photograph.

 My job is to figure out how to create the photograph around your dog.

Should You Be in the Photos With Your Dog?

“I really just want pictures of my dog.”

I've heard some version of that plenty of times.

And I get it.

You contacted a dog photographer because you want beautiful photographs of your dog. Maybe you love being behind the camera but hate being in front of it. Maybe you're already thinking about everything you'd change about yourself before you'd feel comfortable being photographed.

I'm not going to pressure you into something you don't want to do.

But I am probably going to encourage you to consider being in at least a few photographs.

Not because we need the perfect portrait of everyone smiling at the camera.

Because a beautiful portrait can show you exactly what your dog looked like.

A photograph of the two of you together can remind you what it felt like to love them.

And those are two very different things.

1. You Don't Have to Pose for the Camera

When I suggest getting into a few photographs, you might immediately picture the traditional family portrait.

Everybody sits.

Everybody looks at the camera.

Everybody smiles.

And somehow we convince the dog to look in exactly the same direction at exactly the same time.

We can absolutely create that photograph.

But that's only one option.

Some of my favorite photographs of people with their dogs happen when nobody is paying attention to me.

Go for a walk together.

Play ball or frisbee.

Snuggle.

Scratch that spot behind their ear that makes their eyes close.

Let your dog climb into your lap despite having absolutely no business believing they're still a lap dog.

Look at them instead of me.

Laugh when they inevitably do something completely different from what we planned.

Those moments tell me considerably more about your relationship than everyone staring perfectly into the camera.

And sometimes the photographs that aren't quite so perfectly posed become the ones that mean the most.

2. Show Me What Your Relationship Actually Looks Like

Every relationship between a person and their dog is different.

That's something I want to understand before and during your session.

Maybe your dog brings you a ball approximately 7,000 times a day.

Maybe they lean their entire body against your legs whenever you stop moving.

Maybe they sleep with their head on your chest.

Maybe there's a particular way they look at you when you scratch behind their ears.

Maybe your relationship goes even deeper.

I've photographed a service dog with their owner while the dog demonstrated some of the tasks they perform, including opening doors and conducting check-ins.

Those photographs weren't simply portraits of a person standing next to their dog.

They documented a small piece of what that dog actually does for their person .

That's what I want to know about your relationship too.

Your dog doesn't need to perform a special task.

Show me the ordinary stuff.

Show me what happens between the two of you when there isn't a camera around.

Because sometimes the ordinary stuff turns out to be the most important stuff to preserve.

3. Perfect Isn't Always the Photograph That Matters Most

I've spent years learning the technical side of photography.

Lighting matters.

Composition matters.

Focus matters.

Timing matters.

All of those things help me create the finished work my clients expect.

But technical perfection doesn't necessarily determine how much a photograph will eventually mean to someone.

Sometimes the photograph that matters most isn't the one where every ear is perfectly positioned and everyone is looking directly into the camera.

It's the one where your dog is looking at you the way they always do.

It's the laugh immediately after they ignored everything we asked them to do.

It's their paw resting on your leg.

It's the way they press their forehead against yours.

It's something completely ordinary that you've experienced a thousand times.

Until someday it isn't ordinary anymore.

That's when the photograph becomes something more.

4. “But I Hate Having My Picture Taken.”

This might be the most common reason people give me for wanting to stay out of the photographs.

And I'm not going to tell you that you shouldn't feel that way.

A lot of people aren't comfortable in front of a camera.

So let's work with that instead of pretending it doesn't exist.

You don't have to look at the camera.

You don't need dozens of photographs of yourself.

We can make your dog the visual focus of the image.

We can photograph you interacting rather than posing.

Sometimes your face doesn't even need to be the focus. A photograph of your hand resting on your dog's head can tell part of the story too.

And if you're concerned about clothing, colors or what will photograph well, I've put together some advice on what to wear for your dog photography session .

Most importantly, tell me you're uncomfortable.

That's useful information.

Part of my job is creating an environment where both you and your dog can relax enough to be yourselves.

5. You Don't Have to Be in Every Photograph

Let me make this part very clear.

If you book a dog photography session, I'm still going to photograph your dog. A lot.

We'll create the beautiful portraits.

The goofy expressions.

The action photographs.

The quiet moments.

The photographs that show off everything about their personality that made you want to schedule the session in the first place.

This isn't secretly going to turn into a traditional family portrait session that happens to include your dog.

You may only want a handful of photographs together.

That's enough.

Because while you might have dozens of photographs of your dog by the end of the session, those three or four photographs documenting the two of you together are preserving something none of the others can.

Your relationship.

6. Your Dog Doesn't Need to Behave Perfectly for These Photographs

There's another reason people sometimes hesitate to get into the photographs.

They're worried about managing the dog.

“My dog won't sit next to me.”

“They'll never look at the camera.”

“They're going to be too excited.”

That's okay.

In fact, when we're trying to photograph your actual relationship, a little imperfection can sometimes help.

Your dog doesn't need to suddenly become a perfectly trained model just because I picked up a camera.

We work with the dog who's standing in front of us.

I've written an entire article about why your dog doesn't need perfect obedience for great photographs , but the short version is simple:

Let them be themselves.

We'll figure out the rest.

7. These Photographs Change With Time

This is the part that's difficult to fully appreciate when we're creating the photographs.

Today, you might look at one and think:

“That's us at Ashland State Park.”

A few years later, you notice how much younger you both looked.

Later still, you notice the gray that had started appearing around their muzzle.

And someday, you might look at that same photograph and remember exactly how their fur felt under your hand.

Exactly how they looked at you.

Exactly how it felt when they leaned against you.

The photograph hasn't changed.

Its value has.

That's one of the reasons I believe so strongly in creating photographs that go beyond simply showing what your dog looked like.

Years from now, you may look at one of those portraits and shed a tear.

But I hope you smile too.

Because you're not looking at a picture of a dog .

You're looking at a portrait of your dog .

Your relationship.

Your history.

Your life together.

So, Should You Be in the Photos With Your Dog?

I think you should.

Not in every photograph.

Not because you need the perfect portrait for Instagram.

And certainly not because I want to make you uncomfortable during your session.

I think you should because your dog isn't experiencing their life alone.

You're part of their story, too.

And someday, I think you'll be glad we photographed that.

If you're waiting for the leaves to start changing before you start planning your fall dog photography session, you may already be a little late.

But the truth is, there isn't one perfect answer to the question, “How far in advance should I book?”

The season matters. Your schedule matters. Your dog's needs matter. And if you have a specific location, date or deadline in mind, that matters too.

Some sessions benefit from being planned months ahead. Others can happen relatively quickly. Studio sessions give us considerably more flexibility, while something as specific as peak fall foliage gives us a much smaller window.

So rather than giving you an arbitrary number of weeks, let's look at what actually determines when you should start planning.

1. Fall Sessions: Earlier Is Better

Fall is easily one of the most popular times of year for outdoor dog photography in New England.

And for good reason.

The cooler temperatures can be more comfortable for dogs, the foliage gives us beautiful colors to work with, and earlier sunsets mean our evening sessions

start at much more reasonable times.

The challenge is that everyone else knows how great fall is too.

If you're hoping for an October session, particularly on a weekend, I recommend starting the conversation during the summer rather than waiting until October arrives.

We're balancing your schedule, my schedule, the location, changing sunset times, weather and the relatively short foliage season. Building in some flexibility also gives us options if Mother Nature decides not to cooperate on our original date.

The important thing to remember is that you don't need to know exactly when peak foliage will happen before contacting me.

Mother Nature doesn't give either of us her calendar.

We can figure that part out together.

2. WINTER SESSIONS CAN BE SURPRISINGLY FLEXIBLE

Winter doesn't get nearly as much attention as fall, but it can create some beautiful portraits.

Bare trees, muted colors and quieter locations can give photographs a completely different feel from the rest of the year.

And then there's snow.

If you're specifically dreaming about portraits of your dog in fresh snow, scheduling works a little differently.

We can plan for a general time period, but Massachusetts weather ultimately gets the final say. When the right conditions appear, we may need to move relatively quickly.

That's one of those situations where contacting me ahead of time helps. I know what you're hoping for, and when conditions line up, we already have much of the planning done.

3. SPRING SESSIONS DEPEND ON THE LOOK YOU'RE AFTER

Spring gives us a little more flexibility, but timing still matters if there's a particular look you're hoping to create.

Early spring can be quiet and earthy. As the season progresses, grass becomes greener, trees fill in and flowers begin appearing.

If there's a particular spring look you're hoping for, it's worth starting the conversation several weeks ahead so we have time to choose a location and find the right window.

Weather can also be unpredictable, so having some flexibility in the schedule is always helpful.

4. SUMMER IS MOSTLY ABOUT LIGHT AND TEMPERATURE

Summer has long days, which sounds like it should make scheduling easy.

Sometimes it does.

But those long days also push our best outdoor light surprisingly early or late.

During the height of summer, evening sessions may begin much later than people expect. Morning sessions can mean meeting around 5:30 AM if we're trying to take advantage of the best light before the day heats up.

Yes, I'll do it.

No, I'm not going to pretend I enjoy setting my alarm that early.

I do bring coffee, though.

Temperature also becomes part of the planning process. For dogs that don't tolerate heat particularly well, we may need to choose cooler days, earlier mornings or wait for a stretch of more comfortable weather.

The goal is never to force a session onto the calendar just because that's the date we originally picked.

Your dog's comfort comes first.

5. Studio Sessions Give Us Much More Flexibility

Studio photography is a completely different animal.

Because we're controlling the lighting and environment, we aren't waiting for golden hour, worrying about rain or trying to predict when the leaves will change.

Studio sessions can happen throughout the year.

They tend to become especially popular during the colder months, but there's absolutely no reason we can't photograph indoors in June, September or any other time of year.

My studio is located in my home, which gives sessions a private, relaxed environment without the activity of a commercial studio. It is also part of a real family home.

I do everything I can to keep the space quiet and distractions to a minimum during sessions, although every once in a while one of my kids may arrive home and ask the inevitable question: “Can we say hi to the dog?”

I always leave that decision up to the client and, more importantly, the dog.

For some dogs, another new person would be an unnecessary distraction. For others, making a new friend is apparently the highlight of their afternoon.

If your dog is particularly sensitive to children, unfamiliar voices or activity elsewhere in the house, just let me know during our consultation. It's another thing I can consider when choosing the best day and time for your session.

6. Best of Both Worlds Sessions Need a Little More Planning

For clients who want both outdoor and studio portraits, my Best of Both Worlds sessions combine the two.

These require a little more planning simply because we're coordinating two different environments.

Whenever possible, I prefer to schedule the outdoor portion first.

We can take advantage of the best available natural light, then transition back to the studio for the indoor portion of the session.

There's another advantage to doing things in that order.

Once we've finished photographing in the studio, we may be able to transition directly into a same-day viewing and ordering appointment.

The dog gets to relax, you get to see what we've created, and we can start designing the finished artwork while the experience is still fresh.

It's an incredibly streamlined way to experience the entire process.

7. Holiday Cards Have a Real Deadline

If you're hoping to use photographs from your session for holiday cards, you'll want to plan farther ahead.

Assuming you'd like to have your cards mailed by around December 15, I recommend scheduling your photography session for no later than late October .

That gives us enough time for the session, image preparation, your viewing and ordering appointment, and getting everything back to you without turning December into a race against the calendar.

And here's something people sometimes overlook:

Your holiday photographs don't actually have to be taken during the holidays.

Studio lighting gives us complete control over the look of your photographs regardless of what's happening outside.

If you're the person who likes having holiday cards figured out before everyone else has even started thinking about them, we can create holiday-themed studio portraits in October, September or, yes, even June.

I promise not to judge if you're thinking about Christmas while everyone else is headed to the beach.

8. Finished Artwork May Need an Earlier Start

Holiday cards aren't the only reason a deadline matters.

Maybe you're creating an anniversary gift.

Maybe someone's birthday is approaching.

Or maybe you want a finished portrait, album or collection ready to give someone during the holidays.

Different types of custom artwork have different production timelines, so this is something I want to know about before the session.

Rather than simply scheduling the photography and hoping everything arrives in time, we can work backward from the date you actually need the finished artwork.

That takes a lot of unnecessary stress out of the process.

9. If You Need a Particular Date, Reach Out Earlier

The more specific your needs are, the farther ahead you should plan.

If you're available almost any evening over a three-week period, we probably have plenty of flexibility.

If the only date your entire family can be together is Saturday, October 17, that's a very different situation.

The same goes for particular locations, travel schedules or other circumstances that give us a narrow window.

You don't necessarily need to book months ahead for every session.

But if you have very little flexibility, starting earlier gives us the best chance of making everything work.

10. For Senior Dogs, Don't Wait for the Perfect Season

There's one situation where I'm much less concerned about what my normal booking timeline looks like.

If you're thinking about a session because your dog is getting older or their health has recently changed, please reach out.

Don't wait until October because you really wanted fall leaves.

Don't wait until spring because the flowers might be prettier.

And don't assume that because the calendar looks busy, there's no point in asking.

We'll figure out what makes sense now.

There will always be another fall.

The opportunity to photograph your dog exactly as they are today isn't something I'd take for granted.

You Don't Need to Have Everything Figured Out Before You Contact Me

This may actually be the most important part of this entire article.

Sometimes people hesitate to schedule a consultation because they think they're supposed to know exactly what they want first.

You don't.

You don't need to know whether you want Ashland State Park or the studio.

You don't need to know whether you want a large wall portrait or an album.

You don't need to have everyone's outfits picked out.

You don't need to know what backdrop you'd choose.

You don't even necessarily need to know exactly when you'd like the session.

You can simply tell me:

“I've been thinking I'd really like to do this.”

That's enough.

That's exactly what the Dog Photography Consultation Process is for.

We'll talk about your dog, their personality and needs, what you love about them, the type of photographs you're drawn to, where you might like to display the finished artwork and what time of year makes the most sense.

Then we'll figure out the rest together.

So, How Far Ahead Should You Book?

The more specific your vision or deadline, the earlier we should start talking.

If you want peak fall foliage, a particular weekend, holiday cards in the mail by December 15 or finished artwork ready for a specific occasion, planning ahead gives us considerably more flexibility.

If you're considering a studio session and your schedule is flexible, we may not need nearly as much lead time.

But the best time to start planning isn't necessarily three weeks, six weeks or three months before you'd like your session.

It's when you first find yourself thinking:

“I'd really like to do this.”

Why Fall Is One of the Best Times

for a Dog Photography Session

There's something about fall in New England that feels almost made for dog photography.

The temperatures start dropping. The humidity finally gives us a break. The greens of summer begin giving way to yellows, oranges and reds, and locations that we've photographed all year suddenly look completely different.

But beautiful foliage is only part of what makes fall such a great time for a dog photography session.

For many dogs, the cooler weather makes the entire experience more comfortable. The earlier sunsets give us some great options for session times. And if

you love warm, rustic artwork in your home, the colors we create outside during the fall can translate beautifully into the finished pieces hanging on your walls.

So, if you've been thinking about scheduling portraits of your dog this fall, here's why it's one of my favorite seasons to photograph.

1. Let's Start With the Obvious: The Colors

It's New England.

We have to talk about the foliage.

As the leaves begin changing, locations that were almost entirely green during the summer suddenly give us layers of yellow, orange, red and brown to work with.

Those colors can create a beautiful backdrop without becoming the entire point of the photograph. Your dog is still the focus. The foliage simply gives us another tool to complement their coloring and create the overall feel of the portrait.

And one of the things I love about fall is that there really isn't just one "fall look."

Early in the season, we may still have plenty of green mixed with the first hints of yellow and orange.

Around peak foliage, we get the bold reds, oranges and golds everyone associates with a New England autumn.

Later in the season, things become softer and earthier. Fallen leaves, browns, muted colors and bare branches can create an entirely different look.

Each part of the season has something different to offer.

2. Fall Colors Look Incredible With Rustic Artwork

This is something people don't necessarily think about until we start planning what they're going to do with their photographs.

If your home has a rustic, farmhouse or natural style, fall portraits can work incredibly well with reclaimed barnwood frames.

The warm browns and natural variation in barnwood pair almost seamlessly with the earthy colors we find outdoors during fall.

Instead of choosing a frame after the fact and hoping it works with the photograph, we can actually think about the finished artwork before the session.

If you already know you'd love a large barnwood-framed portrait over the fireplace, for example, that can influence the location we choose, the colors we look for and even what you wear.

That's one of the reasons we talk about artwork during the Dog Photography Consultation Process . We're not just creating a pretty photograph and figuring out what to do with it later.

We're creating something specifically for your home.

3. Cooler Temperatures Can Make Happier Dogs

Fall isn't just more comfortable for us.

For a lot of dogs, it's considerably more comfortable too.

Summer sessions can mean heat, humidity and frequent breaks, particularly for dogs with heavy coats, older dogs or dogs that simply don't love warm weather.

Once those temperatures start dropping, we often have much more flexibility.

Dogs can explore.

They can play.

We can take our time.

And we're not constantly evaluating whether everyone is getting too warm.

Of course, fall weather in Massachusetts can have a personality of its own, so I'm always watching the forecast leading up to a session.

The goal isn't simply to get the photographs.

It's to make sure your dog is comfortable while we're creating them.

4. Our Session Times Get A LOT More Reasonable

There's another benefit to fall that I personally appreciate.

The sun starts setting earlier.

During the summer, outdoor sessions can start surprisingly late because we're waiting for that beautiful light toward the end of the day.

As we move into fall, those start times gradually move earlier.

Depending on the date, location and conditions, we may begin around 3:30 or 4:00 in the afternoon .

And I deliberately leave time at the beginning for your dog to get to know me.

There's no expectation that we arrive, immediately put your dog somewhere and start taking pictures.

They can sniff.

Explore.

Figure out who this strange guy with the camera is.

Then we start working.

Morning sessions become considerably more civilized too.

During the height of summer, getting the best morning light can mean meeting around 5:30 AM .

I'll do it.

But I'm not going to pretend it's my favorite thing. ��

By fall, we may be meeting around 7:30 AM , which feels considerably more reasonable.

And yes, for the early risers who choose a morning session, I bring coffee for everyone.

There have to be some perks.

5. Some of My Favorite Locations Really Shine in Fall

We're lucky to have some fantastic locations around Massachusetts that offer a lot of variety during foliage season.

Ashland State Park is one of my favorite locations for dog photography because it gives us water, wooded areas, trails and plenty of different backgrounds within a relatively small area. Borderland State Park offers a completely different feel with open areas, wooded trails, stone features and the historic estate.

And Great Brook Farm State Park gives us fields, trails, woods and that classic New England landscape.

What I particularly like about locations like these is that we're not relying on one specific tree or one tiny area being at peak color.

There's enough variety that we can explore and find what's working that day.

But location decisions aren't based solely on which place has the prettiest leaves.

The right location also depends on your dog .

A dog who's uncomfortable around unfamiliar dogs may need somewhere quieter.

A senior dog may need relatively flat terrain and shorter walking distances.

A young, energetic dog may love having room to move and explore.

It's actually one of the things I recommend considering when choosing the right dog photographer . A beautiful location isn't the right location if it isn't safe and comfortable for your particular dog.

6. "Peak Foliage" Isn't a Single Day

Every year, people understandably want to know:

When will the foliage be perfect?

And every year, Mother Nature gets the final vote.

Temperature, rainfall, wind and other weather conditions all influence when leaves change and how long they stay on the trees.

We can make an educated guess.

We can choose locations that historically give us good opportunities.

But I would never promise that a particular Saturday three months from now will have absolutely perfect peak foliage.

The good news is that we don't need it.

Some of my favorite fall colors happen before and after what would technically be considered peak.

And remember, we're creating portraits of your dog , not portraits of leaves.

The foliage is there to support the photograph.

7. Fall Sessions Are Worth Planning Early

There's one downside to fall.

It's popular.

Between earlier sunsets, changing foliage, weather and a limited number of weekends, there are only so many opportunities during the season.

That's why I recommend starting the conversation before the leaves begin changing.

It gives us time to talk about your dog, choose a location, discuss what you'd like to create for your home and find a date that makes sense.

And if the weather decides not to cooperate, having some flexibility becomes even more valuable.

Fall Doesn't Have to Mean One Particular Look

That's probably the biggest thing I'd want someone to take away from this.

A fall dog photography session doesn't have to mean posing your dog in front of the brightest orange tree we can find.

It might mean a quiet trail covered in fallen leaves.

It might mean muted browns and a rustic portrait designed specifically for a reclaimed barnwood frame.

And most importantly, it should still feel like your dog .

That's what we're really there to photograph.

And don't worry if your dog isn't the type who sits perfectly on command. Your dog doesn't need perfect obedience for great photographs . Part of my job is designing the session around the dog standing in front of me, not expecting your dog to suddenly become someone they're not.

Choosing a Dog Photographer

Choosing a dog photographer isn't all that different from choosing a wedding photographer.

Every photographer has a unique style, personality, and approach to working with both people and dogs. There isn't one "best" photographer—there's the photographer who's the best fit for you, your dog, and the memories you want to preserve.

I've participated in several pet expos where multiple photographers were exhibiting side by side. One of the things I enjoyed most was hearing why people stopped to talk with me.

Some loved the bold, emotional style of my work. Others were naturally drawn to another photographer whose images better matched what they envisioned for their own home.

Neither choice was wrong.

Photography is personal.

Before booking your dog's portrait session, here are seven things I believe every dog owner should consider.

Every photographer on your list will likely answer these questions a little differently, and that's okay. These aren't rules for choosing me—they're the things I would tell my own friends and family to consider when choosing any dog photographer.

1. Safety Should Always Come First

Before you compare pricing, editing styles, products, or social media followers, ask yourself one question:

"Will this photographer keep my dog safe?"

To me, nothing else comes close.

A beautiful photograph is never worth risking a dog's safety.

Safety starts with choosing the right location.

Not every beautiful location is right for every dog.

A reactive dog probably won't enjoy a busy conservation area where off-leash dogs frequently run up to strangers.

An older dog with arthritis may struggle hiking over rocks or climbing steep trails.

A puppy may become overwhelmed by a crowded downtown environment.

Safety also means respecting your dog's comfort level.

If your dog is nervous around water, they shouldn't be pushed into standing in a lake.

If bridges make them uncomfortable, we'll photograph somewhere else.

If they don't like standing on elevated logs or rocks, that's perfectly okay.

Your dog's confidence is always more important than recreating a photo you saw online.

Weather plays an equally important role.

Summer heat, freezing temperatures, icy trails, humidity, and even hot pavement all affect how safely and comfortably a dog can work.

Sometimes the best decision is simply to reschedule.

The right photographer understands that creating beautiful portraits starts with making sure every dog feels safe, comfortable, and respected.

2. CHOOSE A STYLE YOU LOVE

Every photographer sees the world a little differently.

Some create bright, airy images filled with soft pastel tones.

Others gravitate toward bold colors and dramatic light.

Some specialize in studio portraits while others focus entirely on outdoor adventures.

None of those approaches are right or wrong.

They're simply different.

That's why I always encourage people to spend time looking through a photographer's portfolio before booking.

Ask yourself:

"Can I picture these hanging on my walls?"

If the answer is yes, you've probably found someone whose artistic vision matches yours.

3. YOUR DOG SHOULD FEEL COMFORTABLE

The best portraits happen when dogs are relaxed enough to simply be themselves.

That starts long before the camera comes out.

One of the reasons I meet with clients before every session is so we can get to know each other.

We'll talk about your dog's personality, favorite treats, motivations, anxieties, medical concerns, and the relationship you share.

We'll also discuss the artwork you're hoping to create so the session is designed with the finished product in mind.

By the time session day arrives, it feels much less like meeting a stranger and much more like meeting someone you've already gotten to know.

4. Experience With Dogs Matters

Dogs communicate with us constantly.

They just don't use words.

Years ago, I was photographing a dog that had been happily exploring the park.

Suddenly, I noticed everything about their posture changed.

Their body became rigid. Their nose lifted into the air. Their tail slowed to a deliberate wag. The excitement disappeared. Something had changed.

A few minutes later, another person walking through the park stopped and warned us that they had just seen a coyote farther down the trail.

We never saw it ourselves. The dog had sensed it.

We immediately changed our route and continued the session in another area. Was the coyote going to bother us, probably not, but that leads back to putting safety first.

That moment reinforced something I already believed:

Understanding dog body language is just as important as understanding photography.

Over the years I've photographed just about every kind of dog imaginable: giant breeds and tiny breeds, energetic puppies, sleepy seniors, working and sporting dogs, rescued dogs with difficult pasts, reactive dogs, and dogs that simply enjoy life as beloved family pets.

Outside of photography, I've spent years involved in dog training well beyond basic pet obedience. I also regularly talk with local trainers when clients describe behaviors or challenges that are outside my expertise. Sometimes those conversations simply help me better prepare for an upcoming session. Other times they've led to referrals to trainers who were exactly what that family needed.

The more you understand dogs, the better you're able to adapt a session around them instead of expecting them to adapt to you.

Knowing when a dog is tired, excited, nervous, overstimulated, or simply asking for a break allows the session to move at their pace. Those little adjustments often make the difference between a dog that's merely cooperating and one that's genuinely enjoying the experience.

5. Look for Transparent Pricing

One of the most disappointing experiences a client can have is falling in love with their photographs only to discover afterward that they can't comfortably afford the artwork they want.

That situation is avoidable.

Before booking, ask your photographer about pricing.

Ask what their average client invests.

Ask what that investment typically includes.

A photographer should be happy to explain the options available so you can make an informed decision before your session ever takes place.

My goal has never been to convince someone to spend more than they're comfortable with.

It's to make sure every client understands the process before we begin, allowing them to focus on enjoying the experience rather than worrying about unexpected surprises later.

6. CHOOSE SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T RUSH

Dogs don't know they're on a schedule.

Some settle in immediately.

Others need time to explore, sniff, play, or simply figure out what's going on.

A photographer who builds flexibility into the experience is far more likely to capture genuine expressions than someone racing against the clock.

Personally, I only schedule a maximum of two portrait sessions each day.

That gives me the flexibility to work around changing weather, the best available light, and most importantly, your dog's individual needs.

Some sessions wrap up in an hour.

Others take a little longer.

The goal isn't to see how quickly we can finish.

The goal is to recognize the moment your dog has given us their very best.

7. Think Beyond Digital Files

Your photographer shouldn't simply hand you a gallery and wish you luck.

They should help you decide how your images will be enjoyed for years to come.

Will they become a large statement piece over the fireplace?

A collection of framed images in the hallway?

An heirloom album your family flips through together?

Part of my planning process involves talking about those possibilities before the session even takes place. That way we're photographing with your home and your goals in mind from the very beginning.

One of the comments I've heard over the years is that digital files often end up exactly where you would expect: safely stored on a thumb drive, a hard drive, or in the cloud. They're there, but they aren't part of everyday life.

The conversations that stay with me are usually about the artwork.

I've had clients email me years after their session just to tell me how much they still enjoy walking past their portraits every day. One message that especially

meant a great deal to me came from a client after the loss of their dog. They wrote to say how grateful they were that they had invested in the session and that seeing those portraits hanging in their home brought them comfort during an incredibly difficult time.

That's why I believe planning for the finished artwork matters just as much as planning the photographs themselves.

The answer is simple.

You're not paying someone to press a shutter button.

You're investing in an experience, expertise, artwork, and memories that become more valuable with every passing year.

To understand the investment, it helps to understand everything that happens before, during, and after a session.

The Consultation Happens Before a Single Photo Is Taken

As we talked about in a previous blog, long before I pick up a camera, we start planning.

During the consultation, I learn about your dog, their personality, energy level, quirks, favorite activities, and what makes them unique.

We discuss what types of images you'd like to create. Maybe you're dreaming of action photographs, family portraits, dramatic silhouettes, artwork for a specific wall, or something completely different.

We talk about locations.

"What should we wear?"

The funny thing is that most people spend more time worrying about their clothing than their dog does.

Your dog is going to show up exactly as they are.

No concerns about matching colors.

No worries about whether they're underdressed.

No stress about whether their outfit is trendy enough.

As humans, we tend to overthink it.

The good news is that choosing clothing for a dog photography session doesn't have to be complicated.

In fact, my advice is usually pretty simple.

Be Yourself

One of my goals during every session is to capture your dog's personality.

My other goal is to capture you and your family as you really are.

If you don't normally wear matching turtlenecks, don't feel like you need to start now.

If your family is most comfortable in casual clothing, that's perfectly fine.

The photographs hanging on your wall should feel authentic.

Years from now, I want you to look at those images and see yourselves, not a version of yourselves that was created for a photoshoot.

Think polished rather than formal. Comfortable rather than stiff. The best choices are usually the ones that make you feel confident while still feeling like yourself.

The best photographs happen when people feel like themselves.

Coordinating Beats Matching

One of the biggest misconceptions about family photography is that everyone needs to wear the exact same thing.

Personally, I prefer coordination over matching.

Instead of everyone wearing identical white shirts and blue jeans, consider choosing a color palette and building around it.

Earth tones, blues, creams, grays, and muted greens tend to photograph beautifully in many outdoor environments.

When everyone wears slightly different colors within the same palette, the images often feel more natural and timeless.

The goal is for the family to look connected, not like a sports team wearing uniforms.

Think About Your Dog

Believe it or not, your dog's coloring can influence clothing choices.

If you have a black dog, darker clothing can sometimes cause everyone to blend together.

If you have a very light-colored dog, extremely light clothing may reduce contrast.

You don't need to obsess over this, but it's one of the reasons we discuss clothing during the consultation process.

Small adjustments can make a big difference.

Avoid Large Logos and Busy Patterns

Logos, graphics, and busy patterns tend to draw attention away from the subjects of the photograph.

The star of the show is usually the dog.

Simple clothing tends to age better as well.

A photograph hanging on your wall for ten years should feel timeless rather than tied to a specific trend.

Solid colors and subtle patterns generally work best.

Dress for the Location

This is one of the most overlooked considerations.

Many of my outdoor sessions involve at least a little walking.

Sometimes it's a short stroll.

Sometimes it's a moderate hike through trails, fields, or wooded areas.

That means footwear matters.

Flip-flops, high heels, and slippery shoes usually aren't the best choice.

Comfortable shoes that provide good footing will help you enjoy the experience and stay safe throughout the session.

You don't need hiking boots for every location, but you should plan for the possibility that we'll be walking over uneven terrain.

A comfortable client is a happy client.

One of the advantages of our consultation is that we often discuss artwork before the session ever takes place.

Have you ever tried asking a dog to cooperate because you're watching the clock?

It doesn't usually work.

Dogs don't know whether you've booked a one-hour session or a three-hour session. They know whether they're having fun, whether they're getting tired,

and whether something interesting just caught their attention.

That's why I don't build my sessions around the clock.

I build them around your dog.

One of the first questions people ask when planning a session is, "How long does it take?" The honest answer is that every session is a little different because

every dog is different. My goal isn't to finish as quickly as possible. My goal is to create portraits that capture your dog's personality at its very best.

Most Sessions Last About 60 to 90 Minutes

When you book a session with Lil Monster Photography, I typically reserve about two hours on my calendar for you.

Most sessions naturally wrap up somewhere between one hour and an hour and a half , but I intentionally leave extra time in case your dog needs a few breaks, takes a little longer to settle in, or surprises us with a burst of energy halfway through the session.

That extra flexibility helps keep everyone relaxed.

There isn't a stopwatch running.

There isn't pressure to hurry.

Instead, we simply let your dog set the pace.

Indoor and Outdoor Sessions Take About the Same Amount of Time

People are sometimes surprised to hear that my indoor studio sessions and outdoor sessions usually take about the same amount of time.

They simply move at a different pace.

Outdoor Sessions

Outdoor sessions often include a little exploring as we move between locations.

We'll stop to let your dog sniff something interesting, walk to a different backdrop, or take advantage of changing light as the session unfolds.

Those little moments aren't interruptions.

They're part of the experience.

Often, they help dogs relax and allow their personalities to shine through.

Studio Sessions

Studio sessions have their own rhythm.

Instead of hiking between locations, we might pause while changing backdrops, adjusting lighting, bringing out a different prop, or simply giving your dog a chance to reset for a minute.

Some dogs thrive in the quiet, controlled environment of the studio, while others love the adventure of an outdoor session.

Neither one is faster or slower.

They're simply different experiences.

Your Dog Determines the Schedule

One of the biggest advantages of limiting my schedule is that I don't feel rushed.

I only book a maximum of two portrait sessions each day .

One session is typically scheduled during the morning hours, while the second takes place later in the day when the light becomes softer and more flattering during golden hour.

That schedule gives every client my full attention.

More importantly, it gives your dog the time they deserve.

If your dog needs an extra few minutes to warm up, that's okay.

If they need a short break, that's okay too.

The only schedule that really matters is your dog's.

Knowing When It's Time to Finish

People sometimes assume the goal is to take as many photographs as possible. It isn't.

Throughout every session I'm constantly watching your dog.

Not just through the camera.

I'm paying attention to their energy level, their body language, their focus, and their overall attitude.

Are they still engaged?

Are they becoming distracted?

Are they starting to lose interest in treats or toys?

Are they telling us they've had enough?

Dogs are incredibly honest communicators.

If we pay attention, they'll let us know when they're finished.

That's one of the benefits of experience.

Sometimes the perfect portrait happens within the first fifteen minutes.

Other times it happens after your dog has had a chance to settle in and trust the process.

The goal isn't to squeeze every last minute out of the session.

The goal is to recognize when your dog has given us their very best.

Same-Day Image Viewing

One advantage of studio sessions is the option to view your images the very same day.

Many clients love this because the excitement from the session is still fresh.

Instead of scheduling another appointment weeks later, we can sit down together, review your portraits, and begin selecting your favorite images while the experience is still fresh in your mind.

It also streamlines the process for everyone.

For some families, that's a huge benefit.

Others prefer to come back another day.

Either option works perfectly well.

Quality Is More Important Than Time

Some photographers advertise sessions that are exactly thirty minutes.

Others promise two or three hours.

Neither number tells you very much.

What matters is whether your photographer understands dogs well enough to recognize when they're comfortable, engaged, and showing their true personality.

At Lil Monster Photography, that's always the priority.

The portraits hanging on your wall won't remind you how many minutes the session lasted.

They'll remind you of who your dog was.

The goofy expressions.

The gentle eyes.

The excitement.

The quiet moments.

The connection you share.

That's what we're really creating together.

WHEN IS THE RIGHT AGE FOR

A DOG PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION?

One of the reasons people postpone a photography session is because they're waiting for the "right time."

Maybe their puppy needs a little more training.

Maybe their adolescent dog is still a little too wild.

Maybe life is busy right now.

Maybe next year will be easier.

The problem is that dogs don't stay the same for very long.

One day they're small enough to fit inside a picnic basket.

Before you know it, they're standing in front of you with a gray muzzle and a lifetime of memories in their eyes.

If you've shared your life with dogs long enough, you've probably noticed something a little unfair about them.

They never seem to age while we're living through it.

The changes happen so gradually that we hardly notice them.

Until we look back at an old photograph and realize just how much has changed.

That's one of the reasons I believe there isn't a single "perfect" age for a dog photography session.

Every stage of a dog's life has something special worth preserving.

THE PUPPY STAGE

Puppies are chaos.

Adorable chaos, but chaos nonetheless.

They're curious about everything. They haven't quite figured out how their legs work yet. Their ears seem to have a mind of their own. Their paws often look two sizes too big for the rest of their body.

And they're constantly changing.

Many people assume they should wait until their puppy has more training before scheduling a session. In fact, I wrote an entire blog about why your dog doesn't need perfect obedience for great photographs.

If you wait for perfection, you often miss some of the most memorable stages of your dog's life.

Some of my favorite puppy photographs aren't technically perfect.

They're real.

They're expressive.

They're full of curiosity and personality.

No one ever looks back and says, "I wish I had fewer puppy photos."

Puppies often do particularly well in the studio because the environment is controlled and we can keep sessions short and fun while capturing all that puppy charm.

THE ADOLESCENT STAGE

This is the stage that gets a bad reputation.

You know the one.

Your dog knows every command you've ever taught them.

They've simply decided that your suggestions are now optional.

Their energy level is through the roof.

Their attention span can be measured in seconds.

And they're constantly looking for the next adventure.

Ironically, this is one of my favorite stages to photograph. Why?

Because this is often when a dog's personality is exploding onto the scene.

Outdoor sessions can be fantastic during this stage because they allow dogs to move, run, jump, explore, and simply be themselves.

The action photographs created during these years often become some of a family's favorite images because they capture the spirit and energy that define this period of life.

Years later, those photographs become reminders of a time when your dog never seemed to slow down.

THE ADULT YEARS

This is the stage when many people finally decide they're ready.

Their dog is trained.

Their personality is well established.

They're confident.

Predictable.

Comfortable in their own skin.

Adult dogs often excel in both studio and outdoor environments because they have the maturity to settle into a session while still having plenty of energy and enthusiasm.

These years often produce a wonderful balance of portraits, action images, and photographs with family members.

The challenge is that these years tend to pass much faster than we expect.

Life gets busy.

The dog is healthy.

There always seems to be another year available.

Until one day you realize the muzzle has started to turn gray.

THE SENIOR YEARS

Senior dogs have a presence that's difficult to describe until you've experienced it.

The frantic puppy energy has faded.

The adolescent chaos is long gone.

What's left is a lifetime of memories, trust, and companionship.

Senior dogs often have the most expressive eyes.

The deepest connections with their families.

The quiet confidence that only comes with age.

Many seniors do exceptionally well in the studio where they can remain comfortable without needing to navigate long walks or challenging terrain. Others still enjoy outdoor adventures, even if those adventures move at a slightly slower pace than they once did.

The goal isn't to focus on what they've lost.

It's to celebrate who they've become.

These sessions often produce some of the most meaningful images a family will ever own.

WHY I RECOMMEND MORE THAN ONE SESSION

Think about how we photograph children.

Most parents don't take one picture of their child and call it good.

We celebrate milestones.

Birthdays.

Graduations.

Different stages of life.

We understand that a six-year-old and a sixteen-year-old are completely different people.

Dogs deserve the same consideration.

The puppy.

The teenager.

The adult.

The senior.

Each stage tells a different part of their story.

Each stage deserves to be remembered.

I'm not suggesting everyone needs a photography session every year, but there is something incredibly special about having photographs that document the journey rather than just a single moment in time.

DIFFERENT AGES, DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES

Puppies often thrive in the controlled environment of the studio.

Of course, every dog is different.

Some puppies love adventure.

Some seniors still act like puppies.

The answer is simple.

The right age for a photography session isn't six months.

It isn't three years.

It isn't ten years.

It's the age your dog is right now.

Because whatever stage they're in today won't last forever.

One of the most common questions I get during consultations is:

"Should we do a studio session or an outdoor session?"

The answer might surprise you.

Neither is better.

They simply create different experiences, different artwork, and different opportunities to showcase your dog's personality.

Some dogs absolutely thrive in the studio. Others come alive outdoors. And for some dogs, the best option is a little bit of both.

The goal isn't to choose the "best" type of session. The goal is to choose the session that will allow your dog's personality to shine through in the photographs we create together.

WHY SOME DOGS THRIVE IN THE STUDIO

One of the biggest advantages of a studio session is control.

Inside the studio there are no squirrels running through the background, no unfamiliar dogs walking by, no unexpected distractions, and no weather concerns. Everything is designed to help your dog succeed.

Studio sessions are often a great choice for:

Senior dogs
Dogs with mobility limitations
Reactive dogs
Easily distracted dogs
Dogs that become overwhelmed in busy environments
Families who want a more artistic or formal look

The studio is also a wonderful option during the colder months when New England weather can be unpredictable. If you're hoping for beautiful portraits but don't love the idea of standing outside in January, the studio allows us to create images comfortably year-round.

One thing many people don't realize is that professional studio photography uses strobes, which create flashes of light and a small popping sound.

Most dogs don't care about this at all.

Some notice it for the first few minutes.

A small number of sensitive dogs may need a little time to get comfortable.

When that happens, we simply slow down. We introduce the flashes gradually, pair them with treats and praise, and make sure the experience remains positive. The goal is never to force a dog into a situation where they're uncomfortable. The goal is to create a relaxed experience that allows their personality to shine.

THE CREATIVE POSSIBILITIES OF STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY

The studio allows us to create images that simply aren't possible outdoors.

Dramatic black backgrounds, colorful lighting effects, fine art portraits, mirror reflections, holiday card images, and moody dramatic lighting are all possibilities inside the studio.

Studio sessions also tend to work very well for dogs that are highly food motivated. Some of my favorite treat-catching photographs have been created in the studio where we can completely control the environment and focus entirely on the dog.

WHY SOME DOGS LOVE OUTDOOR SESSIONS

Then there are the dogs who seem to come alive the second they step outside.

You know the type.

The ears perk up.

The nose starts working overtime.

The tail starts wagging.

Everything becomes an adventure.

Outdoor sessions give dogs room to explore, sniff, move, and interact with the environment around them. For many dogs, that natural curiosity creates wonderful opportunities for authentic photographs.

One of the reasons I enjoy outdoor sessions so much is the incredible variety available throughout Massachusetts. Depending on the location, we may have open fields, forest trails, scenic bridges, water access, rocky outcroppings, downed logs, and beautiful natural backgrounds all within the same session.

That variety helps us create a gallery filled with different looks rather than the same image repeated over and over.

OUTDOOR SESSIONS ARE PERFECT FOR ACTION PHOTOGRAPHY

If your dog loves to run, jump, chase toys, swim, or simply be active, outdoor sessions often provide opportunities that are difficult to replicate in the studio.

Action photography is one of my favorite things to create.

There's something special about freezing a moment that most people never get to see with their own eyes.

The way a dog's ears move when they're running.

The concentration on their face as they leap over a log.

The excitement of chasing a favorite ball.

Those moments often become some of the most memorable images from a session.

I've also learned a few lessons over the years.

One of my earliest outdoor sessions involved two German Shepherds who absolutely loved water. Unfortunately, we discovered just how much they loved water within the first few minutes of the session.

The moment they found a small body of water, they were in.

Every image for the rest of the evening featured two soaking wet German Shepherds.

The photographs turned out great, but I learned an important lesson that day.

If your dog loves water, we save those photographs for the end of the session.

THE ARTISTIC SIDE OF OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHY

While outdoor sessions are wonderful for action, they're equally powerful for creating emotional and artistic images.

Sunsets.

Silhouettes.

Dogs with their people.

Kids with their dogs.

Quiet moments on a trail.

A dog sitting proudly on a favorite rock overlooking a lake.

These images often tell a story in a way that goes beyond simply creating a portrait.

Outdoor sessions also allow us to use natural light in creative ways. Golden hour, the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset, creates some of the most beautiful light available for photography. That topic deserves an entire blog of its own someday.

The point is that outdoor photography offers endless opportunities for creativity.

WHAT IF YOU CAN'T DECIDE?

Here's the good news.

You don't always have to choose.

Some clients opt for both a studio session and an outdoor session on separate days.

This approach creates incredible variety.

You may have dramatic studio portraits hanging on one wall and action photographs from an outdoor adventure displayed somewhere else in your home.

During the viewing and ordering appointment, having images from both environments often gives clients more options and allows us to design artwork that tells a more complete story about their dog.

Before we ever schedule a session, I want to learn about your dog.

One of the things that surprises people most when they contact me is learning that I include a consultation before every photography session.

Many people assume the process starts when the camera comes out. For me, it starts much earlier.

The consultation is one of the most important parts of the entire experience because it allows me to learn about you, learn about your dog, answer your questions, and create a session plan tailored specifically to what you're hoping to create.

By the time session day arrives, we're not figuring things out on the fly. We already have a plan.

And that's one of the reasons clients often tell me the experience feels so personalized.

Learning About Your Dog

The first thing I want to learn about isn't what products you're interested in or where you'd like to display artwork.

I want to learn about your dog. Every dog is different.

Some dogs are highly food motivated.

Some would do absolutely anything for a tennis ball.

Some are social butterflies who want to greet every person they meet.

Others are a little more cautious and need time to warm up.

Some dogs are full of energy.

Others would prefer to take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the scenery.

The more I understand your dog's personality, the better I can design a session around them.

We'll talk about things like:

Energy level
Obedience level
Favorite toys
Favorite treats
Likes and dislikes
Any concerns you have
Any behaviors we should plan around

This information helps me create an experience that works for your dog rather than expecting your dog to fit into a one-size-fits-all session.

During the consultation we'll discuss what kind of experience you're looking for and what environment will help us create the strongest images.

We'll also talk about the types of photographs you'd like to create.

Some clients love traditional posed portraits.

For example, different products tend to showcase different types of images particularly well.

If someone is drawn to metal prints, I know that vibrant color and strong contrast tend to look incredible on that medium. I'll often look for opportunities to incorporate rich colors and dramatic environments.

Albums require a different approach altogether because they're designed to tell a story. In those cases, I want to make sure we're creating a variety of image types and moments that work well together as a collection.

In other words, I'm not simply creating photographs and hoping they'll fit a product later.

I'm intentionally creating artwork from the very beginning.

I'd much rather have an open and honest conversation upfront than surprise someone later.

Professional photography and custom artwork represent a meaningful investment, and the consultation gives us an opportunity to discuss pricing, product options and what most clients typically choose.

Massachusetts has no shortage of beautiful locations, but if you've spent any time following my work, you've probably noticed one location appears again and again.

Ashland State Park.

There's a reason for that.

Actually, there are quite a few reasons.

After photographing dogs throughout Massachusetts for well over a decade, Ashland State Park remains one of my favorite locations for creating outdoor portraits that showcase both the beauty of New England and the personality of the dogs I photograph.

Variety Matters

One of the biggest challenges with outdoor photography is keeping images looking fresh and unique.

What makes Ashland State Park special is the incredible variety available within a relatively short walk.

The lower angle of the sun can add beautiful highlights, softer shadows, and a little extra magic to the final images.

The Artwork Question Nobody Thinks About Until It's Too Late

When I first started Lil Monster Photography back in 2011, I was what photographers commonly referred to as a "shoot and burn" photographer.

For those unfamiliar with the term, it simply means that after the session I would provide clients with digital files, usually on a CD, DVD, or USB drive, and they could do whatever they wanted with the images.

At the time, there wasn't anything wrong with that approach.

In fact, I'm grateful for those years.

They helped me develop my skills as a photographer, learn how to work with dogs of all personalities, and build a portfolio that eventually grew into the business I have today.

But something interesting started happening years later.

As I reconnected with past clients, I'd often ask a simple question:

"What did you end up doing with your images?"

The answers were surprisingly consistent.

Many would tell me the images were still sitting on the CD I had given them.

Others had transferred them to a USB drive.

Some had them saved somewhere on a computer.

A few weren't even sure where the files were anymore.

Very few had printed them.

Even fewer had them hanging in their homes.

After all the planning, excitement, laughter, and memories created during the session, the photographs often ended up tucked away in a drawer somewhere.

That realization stuck with me.

Because photographs aren't meant to live in drawers.

They're meant to be seen.

The Problem With Digital Memories

We live in a world where we're taking more photographs than ever before.

Every day, countless images are captured on phones, tablets, cameras, and other devices.

The irony is that despite having more photographs than any generation before us, many of those images are rarely viewed.

They're buried in camera rolls.

Stored on hard drives.

Saved to cloud accounts.

Forgotten in folders.

Or sitting on aging media that may no longer even work.

Think about how many people have photos stored on CDs.

How many still own a computer with a CD drive?

USB drives get lost.

Hard drives fail.

Computers crash.

Phones break, get stolen, or accidentally end up in the washing machine.

Cloud backups are wonderful, but they only help if everything was backed up correctly in the first place.

Technology changes.

Storage methods evolve.

Files get misplaced.

What feels permanent today often isn't.

The truth is that digital files are incredibly convenient, but they're surprisingly fragile.

A Shift In Perspective

In 2019, I made a significant change in the way I approached my business.

Instead of focusing primarily on delivering digital images, I shifted toward helping clients create archival artwork for their homes.

The goal wasn't simply to sell products.

The goal was to make sure the photographs we created actually became part of people's lives.

Because something magical happens when an image leaves a hard drive and finds its way onto a wall.

It becomes visible.

It becomes part of your daily routine.

It becomes part of your home.

You don't have to remember to go searching for it.

You don't have to dig through thousands of files.

You simply walk by it.

Every day.

And every time you do, it reminds you of a moment, a feeling, or a chapter of life that mattered.

The Value Changes Over Time

One of the things I've learned over the years is that photographs rarely become less valuable emotionally.

They become more valuable.

The puppy that couldn't sit still becomes a senior dog.

The gray hairs slowly appear around the muzzle.

The walks become slower.

The years pass much faster than we'd like.

What feels ordinary today often becomes precious tomorrow.

I've photographed quite a few dogs over the years who have since crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

Many of those portraits have become some of the most treasured possessions their families own.

Not because they're expensive.

Not because they're large.

Not because they're technically perfect.

Because they're irreplaceable.

They represent a relationship that can never be recreated.

A personality that can never be duplicated.

A chapter of life that deserves to be remembered.

MY Akudra

This lesson became deeply personal for me when we lost my heart dog, Akudra.

Her passing was sudden and unexpected.

Anyone who has experienced the loss of a special dog understands the kind of hole they leave behind.

At first, looking at photographs of her was difficult.

The images brought back the pain of losing her.

The reminders were everywhere.

But over time, something changed.

The sadness slowly began sharing space with gratitude.

Today, I treasure every photograph and video we created together.

In my office, hanging prominently next to my desk, is a 20x30 framed metal print of Akudra running through the snow.

I see it every single day.

And every single day, it makes me smile.

I remember the session.

I remember the weather.

I remember her expression.

I remember her personality.

The joy.

The confidence.

The energy.

Everything that made her who she was shines through that image.

I often tell people it's my favorite photograph I've ever taken. Don't tell my kids.

But it's true.

Not because it's technically perfect.

Not because it won any awards.

Because it means something.

More Than Decoration

When people think about wall art, they often think about decorating a space.

And while beautiful artwork certainly enhances a home, I think there's something deeper happening.

The photographs we choose to display tell the story of what matters to us.

They're daily reminders of the people, experiences, and relationships that have shaped our lives.

For many of us, our dogs are woven into some of our happiest memories.

They're there during celebrations.

During difficult seasons.

During ordinary Tuesday afternoons that don't seem important until years later.

I still provide digital images because they absolutely have value.

They're easy to share.

Easy to store.

Easy to enjoy.

But if there's one thing I've learned during my years as a pet photographer, it's this:

The other lives with you.

Long after the session is over.

Long after the excitement of viewing your images has passed.

Long after your dog has tracked muddy paw prints across the floor one last time.

The photographs that become part of your home are often the ones that become part of your family's story.

Why Your Dog Doesn't Need Perfect Obedience for Great Images

One of the most common concerns I hear from potential clients planning a dog photography session has nothing to do with what to wear, where to go, or what products they might choose afterward.

It's usually something along the lines of:

"I'd love to do a session, but my dog won't sit still."

Or...

"My dog doesn't know any commands."

Or my personal favorite...

"My dog is completely out of control."

The funny thing is that nearly every dog owner says this, regardless of whether they're describing a highly trained competition dog or a Labrador whose life mission is to make friends with every person, dog, squirrel, and leaf they encounter.

After photographing hundreds of dogs throughout Massachusetts, I've learned that perfect obedience has very little to do with creating beautiful images.

The good news?

Your dog does not need perfect obedience to create great photographs.

In fact, most of the dogs I photograph aren't perfectly obedient. They're simply being dogs.

And that's exactly how I like it.

It Starts Long Before the Session

One of the reasons I include a consultation before every session is because it gives me the opportunity to learn about your dog before I ever pick up a camera.

The consultation is one of the most important parts of the entire experience because it helps me prepare for your specific dog photography session before we ever meet with a camera.

Every dog is different.

Some dogs are highly food motivated.

Some couldn't care less about treats but will do anything for a favorite toy.

Some respond best to praise and affection.

Others have specific words, sounds, or routines that immediately grab their attention.

The consultation helps me learn what makes your dog tick so I can tailor the session around them.

It also gives us a chance to talk honestly about obedience, personality, and any concerns you might have.

If your dog struggles with staying still, that's okay.

If they're nervous around strangers, that's okay too.

If they have the attention span of a toddler after eating birthday cake, trust me, I've seen that before.

The more I know ahead of time, the smoother and more enjoyable the session becomes for both you and your dog.

The goal isn't to force every dog into the same mold.

The goal is to create a session that works for the dog standing in front of me.

Every Session Starts the Same Way

Whether I'm photographing a confident social butterfly or a nervous dog who prefers to keep their distance, I approach every session in a very similar way.

We start slow.

I don't immediately shove a camera in their face and expect them to perform.

Instead, I give them time to get comfortable.

I'll often set my camera bag on the ground and let them investigate it.

Most dogs will happily sniff around and satisfy their curiosity.

One dog even decided my camera bag looked like an appropriate place to leave a personal message. Let's just say that particular session started with a quick cleanup.

After that, I let them check out the camera itself.

They can sniff it.

Look at it.

Hear the shutter.

For food-motivated dogs, I'll often pair the sound of the shutter with treats.

Click.

Treat.

Click.

Treat.

Very quickly the camera becomes associated with something positive rather than something strange or intimidating.

By the time we start creating images, many dogs have already decided I'm not so bad after all.

Sessions Often Look Like Chaos

This is something I wish every client understood before their session.

A professional dog photography session can sometimes look like complete and utter chaos. Seriously.

There have been sessions where dogs were running around, sniffing everything, looking everywhere except the camera, and generally acting like dogs.

Meanwhile, the owners are standing nearby convinced that we're not getting a single usable image.

I've had more than a few people apologize repeatedly during a session because they thought their dog was ruining everything.

Many dog owners throughout Massachusetts arrive at their session convinced that their dog is somehow the most distracted dog I've ever photographed.

I promise they're usually not.

Whether we're working in the studio or exploring one of my favorite outdoor locations, most sessions involve a healthy amount of movement, exploration, and unpredictability.

That's normal.

In fact, it's often where the magic happens.

Then clients come back for their viewing appointment and are shocked by what we captured.

The reality is that what you see happening during the session and what I see happening are often very different things.

I'm constantly watching for moments.

A head tilt.

A curious expression.

A goofy grin.

A proud stance.

A connection between you and your dog.

Those moments happen quickly, but they're often all we need.

Breaks Are Part of the Process

A lot of dogs are very similar to young children.

The more you force them to sit still, the less interested they become in cooperating.

That's why I build breaks into many sessions.

Sometimes we'll stop and let them explore.

Sometimes we'll let them run.

Sometimes we'll encourage a game of fetch.

Sometimes we'll simply let them get the zoomies out of their system.

Not only does this help them relax, but it often creates opportunities for wonderful images that showcase their personality.

Some of my favorite photographs have come from those unscripted moments.

The goofy grin after a sprint.

The wild ears flying through the air.

The excitement in their eyes while chasing a toy.

Those moments are every bit as important as the traditional posed portraits.

Your Dog Does Not Need To Be Off Leash

Another concern I hear frequently is that people worry their dog won't be able to participate because they can't safely be off leash.

The good news is that almost none of my sessions require dogs to be off leash.

In fact, many of them remain on leash for the entire session.

One misconception about a professional dog photography session is that every dog needs to be off leash. They don't.

Leashes are incredibly easy to remove during editing.

I also work with owners throughout the session to position and hold leashes in ways that make the editing process cleaner and more seamless afterward.

I'd much rather have a safe dog than take unnecessary risks for a photograph.

Safety always comes first.

If your dog is happiest and safest on leash, that's exactly where they'll stay.

Challenge 2: Get Down

For the second challenge as part of the Embark Photography challenge, I needed to produce an image from a very low vantage point and ideally have a very narrow focal plane visible in the image. Photography is often done at eye level, but an easy way to really be impactful with pet photography is to get down to their level or even lower to showcase the whole animal against the backdrop.

Once again this was more difficult (and slightly painful) than I orginally thought it would be. Now, I'm no stranger to laying down on the ground in some weird fashion in order to get down during photo sessions, but I, admittedly, have never really paid attention to the how the focal plane can play into the rest of the image other than the dog itself... so it was definitely an educational challenge.

Concept 1 & Photo Session 1 - I met a set of new clients and their pup Louie at World's End in Hingham for a wonderful, early morning session. It was a stunning morning, filled with such beautiful light and just an amazing setting to capture a session in. Starting out we had to cross a bridge to get onto the trails and I decided to have Louie pose against the rail and take some images that incorporated some leading lines... completely forgetting (it was early and I hadn't had enough coffee) about the Get Down challenge, but the resulting images were cute and low. I wrestled with using the image a little bit, but ultimately decided that it wasn't low enough and the focal plane wasn't as evident as I wanted it to be. There were a couple of other images from that same session, one in the grass and one in the water that I thought might work as well, but decided against them for different technical reasons.

Concept 2 & Photo Session 2 - I met with a friend and his 2 white GSDs at Callahan State Park for a second run at this challenge. I had scouted the location before and found a few pathways and a small bridge that could work for the challenge. The sun was still a bit too high, as photographing in direct sunlight is difficult enough... photographing a WHITE dog in direct sunlight is not adviseable. We waited a short bit till the sun was filtered a bit through the clouds and positioned Maverick on the bridge. After a few shots Maverick decided that he wanted to play in the muddy stream underneath the bridge and then became a white and black dog lol! We tried some running images through the pathways, but the lighting was making it difficult and the dogs were clearly getting tired of having to go along with what we wanted them to do... they just wanted to explore and play, so we let them. I did edit up and thought about using an image of Maverick on the bridge, but I felt that his position (lower than me because the bridge dipped) and that there was some moderate side light on his face that I didn't want to enter that image.

Concept 3 & Photo Session 3 - The day before the challenge image was due my wife and I took Crash down to a nearby set of fields that have a stone pebble parking lot. We did a mix of posed shots and action shots at a nice focal length 185mm+ and a nice, low aperture of 2.8 to really dial in that nice focal plane. After spending about a half an hour shooting I ended up selecting the very first image of the day for entry. I really grappled with submitting the posed shot or the action shot (which will be in my FB comments), but decided because the focal plan in the action shot as well as the kicked up stones looked a bit blurry to me, that I would go with the posed image. Plus, I really love the lighting of the posed shot as there is a nice top and backlight that seperates Crash from the background. Being a dark dog he tends to blend in with dark backgrounds, but the backlight helps him pop.

Editing: There wasn't a lot to do here, but I did get rid of stray fur and doggy slobber. I brightened Crash's eyes ever so slightly and removed a few bugs from the background. The focal plane on the ground was left alone, as I thought it looked great the way it was.

Image review: Charlotte and Craig agreed that the image met the brief and showed that it was shot from a really low angle. There was some slight conversation about Crash and whether he has a 2nd back leg, which he does, but the legs are lined up so well that they kind of blended together. The critique on the image was that the background greens seemed a bit too saturated and cool in tempature and Crash's tongue was a bit too long in the image. (He does have an abnormally long tongue!). The image was shortlisted and made it into the top 22, but was eliminated just prior to making it into the top 20 for this challenge. I've gone ahead and made the recommended changes in the edit, which you can see in the Facebook post comments ( www.facebook.com/lilmonsterphotography )

Onto the next challenge... Composition 101!

Challenge 1 - Colouriffic

For 2025, I have chosen to push my creative boundaries by participating in a six-month photography challenge called Embark, hosted by Unleashed Education. This intriguing challenge consists of 12 distinct photography tasks spread over six months, each requiring a dedicated and intentional approach. The essence of this challenge is to submit an image for each pet photography task every two weeks. These submissions are then evaluated and critiqued by two internationally acclaimed, award-winning pet photographers. With around 100 photographers from across the globe participating under the same guidelines, the competition is both thrilling and intense. After each submission deadline, the judges release a video review and select the top 20 images, which are further narrowed down to a top 10.

Here's a detailed account of my experience with the first challenge:

The initial challenge was to creatively use either a single or multiple bold colors in the background of an animal photograph, ensuring the colors are harmonious and complementary.

As I have come to realize, these challenges present more complexity than they initially appear to have. This realization led me to develop four different concepts and conduct three separate photo sessions before arriving at an image I felt confident enough to submit.

Concept 1 , which ultimately did not result in a photo session, involved using my studio to pose my dog, Crash, against a black background. The plan was to employ a fog machine and lighting gels to alter the fog's color to complement Crash's fur, which is a blend of black, tan, and orange. However, due to budget constraints, this idea was not pursued further.

Concept 2 & Photo Session 1: We ventured into the backyard, where we set up a 6-foot folding table on the ground with me positioned underneath to shoot directly upwards. My wife coaxed Crash onto the table with treats, capitalizing on his strong food motivation, and I captured his attention downward toward the camera for a unique perspective. The blue sky served as a natural backdrop, and we were fortunate to include a wispy cloud in the frame. Additionally, a bit of a tree top was captured to provide perspective. Despite these elements and a t-shirt that was very wet from Crash drool, I decided against using this image as it did not sufficiently highlight the orange and tan hues of Crash's fur. However, the image is now my desktop because I find it very cute!

Concept 3 & Photo Session 2: I reached out to my niece who has an adorable Aussie named Ruckus, who was more than willing to assist with the challenge. We tried to use a big blue wall at one of the litle league fields here in town, but unfortunately the field was completely overrun by exuberant kids enjoying an evening game, so we changed plans and headed downtown to see if we could find anything that would work. We ended up in a nice part of downtown that had some red brick buildings and colorful artwork. Ruckus posed for a few shots, but the coloring didn't appear bold enough to me and the images, while beautiful, weren't what I wanted to use for the challenge.

Concept 4 & Photo Session 3: I took to online searches for bold colors around town and did manage to find some really nice areas of blue that could work and one that looked amazing, but we'd need a bit of luck for it to be doable! With only 2 days left in the challenge we headed to the nearby playground with only a glimpse of hope that no kids would be there. As luck would have it and probably because it was a bit cold, overcast and dinner time, there weren't any kids on the playground. We rushed on and within a matter of a minute or so we snapped the image that would eventually be my entry into the Colouriffic challenge!

Editing: Once I uploaded the images onto the computer I knew EXACTLY which one I wanted. I beautiful puppy pose view image with a slight head tilt and inquisitive eyes, but there was one problem... Ruckus' left paw wasn't showing, as it was tucked under his busy fur. A little cloning and angling later and we had a new left paw. I boosted the colors a little and added a little light to Ruckus' eyes and I was done.

Critique: So the critique videos are posted on Wednesday evenings at 8PM local time and I had been anxiously awaiting the review! I had already seen all of the other entries and was convinced that there was no way my image was as good as many of them... there were so many beautiful images!! I watched the entire critique like I was watching a sporting event and rooting for everyone to do well. When it came time for my review I was told that I needed to be careful with my eye touch ups and that I had left a little bit of doggy drool on the bottom of Ruckus' jaw, otehrwise they loved the image and thought the complimentary bule to Ruckus' orange was nicely done. A big sigh of relief!! My image was shortlisted, which meant it was in consideration for Top 20 and top 10. Once all of the images were reviewed the judges narowed down from 27 images to the top 20, which Ruckus was included in. Ultimately my image didn't make the top 10, but I was still very delighted to have placed in the top 20 from the 80 images that were submitted.

What's so great about craft fairs/vendor events??

In short, EVERYTHING!!

As a pet photographer I have an opportunity to participate in some really great events to not only promote my own artwork, but to help with some absolutely amazing causes that benefit animals in need around our area and beyond. This blog will talk about some of my experiences with these events (great, good and not so good), the benefits of visiting vendors at these events and will end with a list of the events I will be attending this year.

First, let’s just get this out of the way, but by far the absolute best thing about participating in these events is all the awesome interactions that I get to have with everyone else’s dog(s). If you’ve been by my tent at any event, you are likely to see me squatting or sitting down on the ground snuggling someone’s pup and it’s just the best!! These events are full of pawsitive interactions and great conversations about the animals that sometimes I don’t even get around to pitching my services… I just talk about the furry family member(s).

Another thing that is so great about these events is the conversations I get to have with pet parents and talking about whether they have thought about hiring a photographer for the pup. An increasing number of pet parents that I speak with have hired a photographer, which is so great to hear!! It’s so worth it to memorialize the different stages in a dog’s life, as they grow up so fast. At an event today I saw a previous client who had hired me last fall to do a photo session with her adult Beauceron and her 10-week-old Beauceron… the puppy had outgrown the adult already!! I was blown away and actually called them by the wrong names because there was no way that in just a matter of months that the puppy could be so big, but boy was I wrong. We all had a good laugh about it and I got to snuggle both pups.

During these pet parent conversations, it’s also great to discuss some frequently asked questions and concerns, such as pricing, dog behavior, anxiety and the inability to be off leash… all topics of recent blog posts of mine. In short, I love to provide as much information to clients in these brief conversations and then let them decide in their own time if scheduling a pet photography session is the right thing for them.

At craft fairs/vendor events I usually bring a wide assortment of pictures, prints and product with me so that pet parents can see all the options that they could have their images printed on. It’s one thing to see the different products in a catalog, but it’s so much better to see the artwork in person. Clients get to see how the colors pop off the metal prints, how classic the barnwood frames look and how the acrylic glass prints and blocks give a 3-dimensional feel to the images.

What’s funny is that during some of the events that aren’t dog centric I can always tell who the dog owners are by the smiles I see as they approach my booth. Instantly they are putting their dogs in the images, in the frames, on the metals in their heads and it’s simply great!

Now, not all the events have been sunflowers and candy canes… occasionally events do come up and there’s a poor showing, but my experience with those is that is normally due to weather. Early spring events can be tough because of the rain… and artwork doesn’t really love humid weather. Also, summer events can sometimes be a bit sparse because of the heat. However, there’s always people that come out and there’s always a dog to snuggle, which makes it all worthwhile.

Another great benefit to coming out to the craft fairs and vendor events is to support the local charity hosting the event. I’ve done a bunch of charity sponsored events and the response has been phenomenal! Whether it’s Save a Dog, Buddydog, Project Samana or any one of the other charities I have had the privilege of working with these events are top notch and serve such a greater good that I’m happy to participate.

Lastly, these events are always filled with super awesome vendors from all walks of life. There are normally food vendors, music, games, raffles and prizes to be won. All around these events offer something for everyone!

As a dog photography business owner, I often hear from owners that they can't seem to get good action shots of their furry friends. But, once they see the images we create together, they are stunned. Capturing the energy and spirit of a dog in motion is one of the most rewarding and exciting aspects of dog photography. In this blog post, we'll discuss how we create beautiful action shots and how they can benefit your furry family member.

I have found that single person sessions can be a bit tricky, as recalling the dog to me (away from the owner) can sometimes not be very effective. Unless your dog has a great sit/down stay that allows you to walk away from him/her back to my location then having a second person to recall to is always the best option for safety and results.

Another benefit of action photography is that it can help to create a relaxed atmosphere during the photo shoot. Dogs are often more comfortable when they're able to move around and have fun, which can lead to better posed photos, as sometimes the dogs just need to get the sillies out… I mean, who doesn’t love a good zoomie? And of course, the action shots themselves can be a great addition to a collection of posed images and even better when incorporated in a gallery!

From rambunctious puppies to calm senior dogs, I've captured images of them all. But there's something truly special about capturing a puppy's portrait. Puppyhood is such a fleeting time in a dog's life, and it's something that passes by much faster than we ever expect. This is why I believe that puppy portrait sessions are so important. Not only do they allow us to capture the cuteness and innocence of our puppies, but they also give us images that we'll fondly look back on for years to come.

One of the reasons why puppy portrait sessions can be challenging is because puppies are full of energy and can be difficult to control. However, this is also what makes them so special. The excitement and joy that puppies bring to our lives is something that can't be replicated. The emotionally difficult topic of "End of Life" portrait sessions (I needed tissues while writing this one)

As an animal lover and dog owner myself, I understand the pain of losing a pet all too well. On August 13th, 2021 I lost a piece of my soul, my once in a lifetime heart dog, Akudra, very suddenly and without warning. I was broken, shattered and for a while inconsolable, but I forced myself to never shy away from the myriad of images I have of her. To this day Akudra’s images are still hanging in my home, in my office, on my desktop and on my phone. Akudra (Lil Monster) is also the namesake of my business, is on the logo, my business cards and her paw print is literally tattooed right next to my heart. I see her every day and often sit in quiet remembrance of the amazing bond we shared, the laughs, the amazing adventures, the lessons we both learned and the extraordinary companionship that she unconditionally gave to me. I am so grateful for the time I had with my Akudra even if it still hurts sometimes to think about. In the wake of losing Akudra I was reminded of a quote that a friend once shared with me:

"Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened." - Dr. Suess

Thinking about how crazy the world is and how one simple decision can lead you down a completely different path, it's so easy to think that had we made one different decision before getting this animal then they may never have been put in our path... but that didn't happen and we all have been blessed with so many amazing, loving animals. As such we need to cherish each moment with them and try and preserve their memory so that we can look back and smile fondly when we think of them even if that smile is sometimes accompanied by tears.

For this reason end of life sessions for dogs can be difficult to think about, but they can also be a beautiful and heartfelt way to memorialize your furry friend. As the owner of Lil Monster Photography, I understand the sadness and anticipation that comes with the loss of a pet, and I approach these sessions with the utmost respect and care.

As a dog photographer, I've worked with dogs of all temperaments and personalities, including those who are nervous or anxious. While these dogs may require a little extra patience and attention during a photo session, with the right approach, it's still possible to capture beautiful and memorable images of your furry family member. Here are a few tips for dog owners with nervous or anxious dogs to help ensure a successful photo session:

Take things slow: As a photographer, I always take things slow and get to know the dog before taking any photos. This is not only true for anxious/nervous dogs, but every dog, even if the dog is described as a super happy go lucky, “wigglebutt” of a dog. I'll sit down on the ground with them, let them sniff my camera bag and camera, and give them time to become comfortable with me and the environment.
Bring familiar items: Bringing along familiar items like their favorite toy or blanket can help your dog feel more at ease during the photo session. Having something that smells like home can provide a sense of comfort and familiarity for your pet.
Choose a comfortable location: Choosing a location that your dog is familiar with, such as a favorite park or backyard, can help them feel more comfortable and relaxed during the photo session. I provide all prospective clients with a Location Guide that describes each of my favorite locations to shoot at, including the best times of the week and day.

I'll click the camera shutter and give them a treat so that they begin to pair the shutter click with the food, which makes it a positive thing. This can help your dog feel more comfortable around the camera and make the photo session a more enjoyable experience for everyone involved. This can also help with getting the dog’s attention later when he/she is posing because the pup thinks I still have food.
Stay relaxed: Dogs are very intuitive and can pick up on our emotions. If you're feeling anxious or stressed during the photo session, your dog may become more nervous as well. Staying calm and relaxed can help your dog feel more at ease and make the photo session a more enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Clients have time and time again said to me that all they saw was a chaotic crazy mess, but are mesmerized by the images we were able to pull out of the session, so take a breath and enjoy the moment.

With every session inquiry I always like to begin with a consult to discuss not only a dog’s personality, when and where a client would like to have a session, how a client plans to display their artwork, but also to address any client concerns if their dog can’t be off-leash.

I understand that some clients may have concerns about working with their dog on-leash during a photography session. However, I want to reassure you that I have plenty of experience working with all kinds of dogs, from the energetic and playful to the more reserved and cautious. I always take the time to get to know your furry family member and their unique personality, so I can create a customized plan that works best for you.

There’s never any pressure to take your dog off-leash and that decision is solely left up to you, as you know your dog better than anyone. I always recommend that a dog stay on leash if they don’t have a strong recall under distraction, are reactive and especially if they are aggressive.

If an outdoor session is preferred or required, I will work with you to find a location that your dog is familiar with and comfortable in. I will also discuss the best approach for working with your pup on-leash during the session, taking into account their specific temperament and behavior. In addition, we can discuss different locations that offer less distraction

In some cases, I may recommend working in-studio to provide a safe and controlled environment. About Lil Monster Photography

I’m a dog and horse photographer in Boston, Massachusetts, and I serve clients in New England and the surrounding areas. I specialize in pet portraits and action photography, but I’ve been known to take photos of other animals, including the two-legged variety ;-).

I’ve been clicking pictures of pets for approximately ten years. However, it was more of a hobby at first and became a business in 2016, when I decided to get serious about my artwork. Along with prepping for the photo session, I conduct client education, which helps to create high end, museum-quality photography that can proudly be displayed on walls in homes.

One of my most significant achievements has been surviving 2020! No, really, it’s been the balancing act of managing the business with a full-time career and a very young family.

Photography is more than an escape for me as I get to meet and play with other people’s dogs and horses, which makes my day.

My dream for the future is to continue to learn from other photographers and my clients. I feel that I understand new things with every session, and this process is vital to my growth.

I’ve also taken to Instagram, Facebook and updated my website to have a more prominent online presence and to develop my brand equity. Additionally, I’ve created some partnerships with animal-related businesses where I offer free products and services.

I also believe in giving back to society. As part of that belief, I regularly donate to area animal shelters, Seeing Eyes for the Blind, and have hosted events for charities such as Project Samana Inc.

Wayside Inn – Sudbury, MA

The Wayside Inn is a widely known photography session destination for engagement, wedding and portrait photographers due to the historical character of the buildings, including the grist mill. After many pet photography sessions and countless hours exploring the grounds, I’ve found numerous locations that offer beautiful backdrops and interesting foreground that make for great pet portraiture. Also, there is a large open field nearby that can be used to grab some action shots of dogs running, playing ball or otherwise exploring. The grounds also offer some availability for water backdrop images, intriguing bridge opportunities and even a waterfall from the grist mill.

Arnold’s Arboretum – Jamaica Plain, MA

Arnold’s Arboretum offers over 275 acres of land to explore and utilize for some stunning photographs. Inside the park there are paved walk ways that lead to and a myriad of gardens of every shape, size and variety. The arboretum boasts near year-round blooming of different species of plants, flowers and trees that make for stunning backgrounds, as well as at least 2 picturesque small ponds. Trails wind through covered areas where there is interesting light at any time of day and wide-open fields for some action shots. If you’re looking for a nice walk with your session, bring your walking shoes, a bottle of water and your pup and we’ll have a great time!!

Ashland State Park – Ashland, MA

Ashland State Park is one of the first locations that I ever did a photo session and it can be a lot of fun, especially if your dog loves water!! The park offers a 4 mile plus hike around the Ashland Reservoir, which at parts can be slightly challenging, but manageable. The wooded hike offers several opportunities for water loving dogs to take a dip, splash and run around. There is a good amount of free space and some nice locations for some set up portrait shots with a beautiful water backdrop. Like Arnold’s Arboretum, the Ashland State Park is definitely a hiking session best suited for those who are comfortable with some uneven terrain and inclines. Hiking boots or sneakers are a must with this location, but well worth it. Also, as a warning, there are often several off-leash animals here, so a friendly, non-skittish dog with a great recall does best at this location.
